Hey, KING!...
« on: December 07, 2002, 04:14:36 AM »
Sorry to be so long getting back on this, but this software is so slow to operate that I visit less often, so I'll have more time.
The rifles you (and wiley g, at the bottom of the postings) refer to are (or were; I don't think they're around any more) from RMAC (Rocky Mountain Arms Co., Salt Lake City) and were in the Black Powder Gun Digest, Toby Bridges, ed., 1972. The owner of this enterprise was Richard J. Casull. The rifle came in several calibers, was a breechloading black powder arm, and, as far as I know, was never very successful, economically. How successful it was mechanically, I have no idea. There was a rotating "turret" behind the barrel, which, when turned, exposed the chamber for powder and ball. Rotating it back sealed up the system and placed the chamber in line with the barrel, which was a tad undersized, with a "forcing cone". This provided a good gas seal and ball-to-bore fit. A percussion nipple and centrally-hung hammer completed the system.

Is everybody from Mi? CharlieD, you explained it better than I did. The one I got is a 22 and a little whipped. The 22 pellets are hard to find, use air gun pellets. And, cap guns are no longer PC, so caps don't grow on trees any more, either. Always wondered of that Casull was Mr454  Casull?

That's a bit of news...I guess I didn't re-read the article closely enough; I didn't realize they were using kids' capgun caps for ignition. 6 or 7 gr of powder does seem a little anemic, but of course .22 balls don't weigh much and the gas seal should supply lots of compression. Should help to cut down on the fouling, even in such a small caliber.
I think that Casull is the same Casull that made up the original .454s, along with a fellow named Fulmer, if I'm not mistaken.

Born in Detroit, lived on both coasts before I was 10, back to Detroit for High School. Chicago for College (Yep! You guessed it...that's where I became a flaming Red [except for the 2nd Amendment, and a respect for property and accountancy]...University of Chicago) and about 20 years in Chicago area...now live in Milwaukee, drink lotsa beer (Österreicher, if I can get it), and shoot at least once a week.

Used to be an airdale sailor. Been living in SE Mi for 25 years, doing Mr Ford's bidding. Very partial to any brew from the Molson folks. Made meat on openers, 15 Nov; but really looking for BP openers on 13 Dec!
