That's odd. :?   Then what do they use?

I use them with no problem.  I am going to get the one-piece cleaning rods that most people have recommended.  These rods do have the cleaning brushes.  I use the Barnes cleaner and then Breakaway.  My barrels are always clean and accuracy is great, and by barrels look great too.

They just use patches. In my Tikka manual it says not to scrub the barrel and thats what they are talking about. When i read the manual the way i took it was not to scrub the barrel with the forward - reverse motion. What do you think?  Hunter30

I don't know hunter - I clean my Tikkas the same way I clean all of my other rifles - Remington, Winchester, Browning, etc.  Now you got me wondering - am I doing something wrong??  I mean - my Tikkas are still super accurate.

I have my owners manual and this is what it says word for word.

Cleaning The Barrel

When cleaning the barrel always do as follows:

- Always push the cleaning/oiling patch from the breech end.

- Do not scrub the barrel.Simply push the patch through the barrel and  out through the muzzle.Repeat as necessary.

- Use only absolutely strait and sturdy cleaning rods.

I use a bore guide and a 2 piece rod.I push the rod thru and take the jag/patch or borebrush off and carefully pull the rod back out and repeat until clean.I tried just the patch and solvent and could not get the barrel clean. The barrel was only clean after i used the borebrush. So i don't know maybe they are right?I would like to hear some feedback from the other members and see what they think too.  Hunter

Hunter30 is correct, never pull a patch or brush back through.  I hardly ever use a brush on my barrels.  After regular cleaning I use JB Bore Paste and run it through about 5 to 7 times using the same patch.  If you think your bore is really clean then buy some JB Bore Paste and try it after your regular cleaning you real see the difference and you will be shock what you will fine.

Well, I guess that I should follow the same technique.   BTW, I will also go to the local gun store and get some of the that Butch cleaner.  My Barnes cleaner works well, but I'll give the JP Bore Paste a try.

I started using a "boresnake" on all of my rifles several months ago.  From what I can see they work great.  After 2 cleanings I put them in an old sock and put them in the washing machine.  They come clean real well.  I dont know why I would use anything else. :D

One thing to remember regarding JB paste.  It's wonderful stuff and I use it to polish barrels, but don't ever expect to push a patch thru with JB on it and have it come out clean.  It will always come out dark gray because it's polishing the barrel steel, and is picking up some material on every pass.  What I am saying is don't keep polishing waiting for a clean patch, cause it ain't gonna happen.  Use it for a few passes and then reclean with Butch's or whatever you like.  Look for a clean patch using the solvent, not the polish.

Don't forget to follow the instructions on the JB bore paste.  It requires the use of a good light oil also.  If you're going to the gun shop to get some of this stuff, don't forget the oil!

I'll second what tominboise said about the patches being clean when they come out, you'll never really see that on a patch that has had 2 or more passes through the barrel.  When you've used the JB as directed, clean it out of your barrel and the check to see if it's completley clean using your usual technique.
