« on: March 05, 2003, 01:15:37 PM »
Hey guys i'm thinking of buying a 8mm mauser maybe two of them.My question is are there two bore sizes i read once a few months ago about early models had a smaller bore.If this is true how can i tell the differece.I may be a dumb question but i need to know.
My local gun shop has a yugo 98 never issued and all numbers match price is $189.00(asking price ) .I can always get him down some. What do you think. If i can swing two of them i want to sporterize one ,cut barrel and new stock is this a big job to do.
Thanks

Yes, your previous info is correct.

The orginal "8mm Mauser" was called the 8x57 in european circles.  It was the standard German service rifle caliber in the M1888 "Commission" rifles using a bore of .311" and groove diameter of .318" for a roundnosed bullet.  This was called the "J" bore.

With the 1898 German military adoption of the M98 Mauser, the groove diameter was changed to .323".  This was called the "S" bore with the 1905 adoption of spitzer bullets in service ammunition.

A number of old European military and sporting rifles used the old .318" groove diameter.  It is dangerous to fire standard 8x57 ammo in unknown 8mm rifles until the gun and ammunition are examined by a competent gunsmith.

The good news is that your Yugo M48 rifles uses standard 7.92x57mm German Service ammunition.  They are of post-WWII manufacture on German-made equipment

:D i have 2 mausers and the are great guns i am not aware of 2 different bore sizes the only thing i can think of is two barrel sizes that would be a standard barrel and a bull barrel but non the less both shoot 7.9mm (8MM) shells I also sporterized one and it takes nothing to do a standard rem.700 stock will fit most mauser 98 models but make sure you buy a stock made for a long action which you 8mm probablly have you can pick up the stocks any where from 80 to 170 dollars depending on stock cabelas magazine has a nice selection of stocks the best shells i have found to shoot are seller and bellot also found in cabelas they are 8x57 which will shoot great out of your guns they are soft tip 196grain and run 10.99 a box but if you want to just go out plinking try buying shells from a gun show i just picked up 1400 rounds for 80dollars and they were full metal jackets I hope i have been of some help and good luck
