Ok. This will sound like a typical, newbie neophite post coming from me, but here it goes.
I have a 16" 22 Hornet barrel that I am thinking about using for night time varmint hunting here in the Bay State. I have an Aimpoint that I can put on it for such a use. The vast majority of hunting here in Massachusetts is in the woodlands, so shots more than 25 to 50 yards are actually rare. I was thinking as to if it was enough gun? I shot a coyote last winter with my muzzleloader during our MZ deer season. I was surprised at how much punishment it took. Although coyotes have been killed with the 22 Hornet , I still wonder if I should try to get something a tad bigger.
The bigger reason that I want to use that particular caliber is that here in Massachusetts I can hunt at night with a pistol as long as it is under 38 caliber. So, I could use the .22 hornet that I have legally and the when I go see my fiancee in Rhode Island just down the road, I can screw on a butt stock and have a legal carbine in that state( I querried into a pistol permit in RI and the police officer said that being a non-resident I would have to contact the Atty General and he doesn't like to give them out ) thus staying out of the license plate factory for the three mile jaunt across the border. I bet other hunter's don't have to worry about stuff like that?
