50/90 Twist Rate
« on: December 12, 2005, 09:21:08 AM »
I'm building a 50/90 and will probably be shooting 600 to 650 gr. paper patch bullets. Which rifling rate would you guys use? I'm thinking 1-18 for the long heavy bullets.

I shoot 450 to 510 grain bullets and have found the 1 in 18 twist ( Green Mountain barrel) to be fine, but at the lower velocities it might be advantages to look at a slower twist of 1 in 20 or 24, check with your barrel maker or give Dave, at Lone Star Rifle a call, he is a fan and authority on the 50/90.

I'd go with the 1-18" or 1-20", but definitely not any slower! Whenever I am unsure, I find it's always better to error towards a faster twist rate. That long 600-650 gr. bullet needs a lot of spin!

Thanks MM93 & fe352v8, I just recieved 2 Green Mt. barrels .50 cal 18" twist rate.

Got them from Midway USA, cheaper from them than direct from Green Mt.
