Author Topic: What am I doing wrong? BoreSnake won't go through the barrel (Read 1525 times)

Here is the situation:

After haveing the threads strip on the plastic ends of the regular rifle cleaning kit, I went out and bought a Hoppes BoreSnake, thinking that it would be easier. IT IS NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i did EXACTLY!!! as the direction on the box said to do. I inserted the brass tipped cord through the barrel from the open chamber. I got the brass tipped cord out of the end of the barrel and then pulled. I was being VERY carefull not to snag the BoreSnake on anything. The brass bristle part of the BoreSnake went through the chamber end of the barrel about 1 or 2 inches, then it stopped. I could not pull it any further through the barrel. I tried twice to do it but the same thing happened. I was able to pull it back out of the barrel.

1. What am I doing wrong?

2. Should I try going through the muzzle end of the barrel instead?

3. I did not put any cleaner on the snake, just went through dry . Would it have made any difference..

4. The rifle is a new Winchester Model 94 30-30.

5. The BoreSnake is for a 30-30 rifle>

Need help. FAST!!!!!!!!!

coyote trapper if it is the correct boresnake and it is hoppes brand , I think it will be green. I would put a fair amount of solvent on the front brush area to about 2'' behind. The procedure you're using sounds fine. The solvent will help lube it. The more snake you pull through the tuogher it will get to pull. I,ve often wondered myself if the snake would pull apart but it never has for me. Make sure your barrel is not obstructed first. Just pull hard and it should go. If your cleaning rod tips broke on this gun I would definitely look down the bore first by shining a light from the chamber and look down the barrel end. Good luck.

I checked to see if by chance the barrel was obstructed, by using the brass brush that came with the regular hoppes cleaning kit. That went through fine and nothing was in the barrel. I bought the boresnake because the plastic tips on the regular cleaner kept coming off the rod after just one use.

Do you know if they still make brass or bronze patch holders. Sure would be easier than this BoreSnake :roll:

I use bore snakes on all of my rifles without problems. The 1st time you use one it will be harder. Just do as you have done, thru the chamber end, and then hang on to the rifle and have someone else pull the rope end. After the 1st time it will go thru much easier.

Yes they do. I get mine online at Midway USA . I also like the dewey 1 piece cleaning rods and redhead tornado brushes. Good hunting, Killdeer

The one I have for my 243 tales one he!! of a pull to get it through but sure does a good job when it does come thorough. I wouldn't doubt if there is some size variation to these things. Maybe a bit of wax in front of the brush would help.

One more thing. Do not start it where your brass ejects but where you insert your bolt.

If it is the correct size, on the brass tip of the snake, it will have a small "30" stamped on the side.

It is the correct size. I got sick and tired of trying to pull it through the barrel. I never would have bought the BoreSnake if I knew that I would need 2 PEOPLE TO PULL IT THROUGH THE BARREL!!!! :eek: I searched all over trying to find a brass slotted patch holder , but nobody has them in stock. I talked to my local hardware store . They have brass pieces in stock. They are going to see if they can make up a duplicate of the plastic slotted patch holder out of brass.

I have a Bore Snake for my 204 Ruger barrel on my Encore!

The first 2 times I used it, it was so tough to pull through that I used a piece of 1 inch dowel rod to form a T-Handle and it pulled through ok!

Now I don't need the T-Handle! It pulls through easy enough without it!

They are definitely tight the first time or two!

Hate to hear of your misfortune..5 yrs ago I bought an Otis universal cleaning kit,pricey but still works after many uses..slotted BRASS patch holders..good stuff in my opinion. It is a good thing for my guns that I can not clean from the breech with my one piece stainless ProChoice rods. I also use the spider wire braided fishing line and patch to clean 22's
