Omega range report
« on: December 18, 2005, 12:08:56 PM »
I shot the Omega at fifty yards yesterday and at 100 yards today. Two Triple 7 pellets didn't allow my 295 powerbelt hollow points to group to my likeing so went to three pellets. At 50 yards they were all touching at 3 inches high and at 100,they were grouping at 1-1/2" or under and 4 inches high.I change the scope setting to hit 1 " high at 100 and left it there for the up-coming Ohio muzzel load seaon.I tried the 295 gr.powerbelt spire points but they gave me a 2 inch group, of course,I only shot 3 rounds of the spire poits.I cleaned between shots with a pach of no.13 followed by a dry patch.Loading went uneventful and there was no sign of a crud ring at any point.I used the Remington kleen bore primers.A total of 24 shots where fired.I used Dawn dishwashing detergent and hot water for cleaning followed by a pactch of bore butter for storage until the season starts.I need to get the cleaning part better organized as I found myself all thombs at times.I was concerned about the breach plug threads and didn't want to mess them up.Putting never sieze on the inner threads was difficult with the scope in place and my fat fingers.I used a dowel rod to dob grease on them and just ran some grease with my fingers, over the threads on the plug.
The trigger pull is what I like in a hunting rifle but I didn't put the trigger pull gauge on it .My guess,it broke at about 3-1/2 pounds.I wouldn't do anything to change it and I am fussy when it comes to the trigger's on my hunting rifles.
The fact that I didn't have to deal with a crud ring was a blessing. Some of the posts that I read really had me scared. My rifle cleaned up nice and the stainless barrel is as smooth and shiney as glass.Balance is great as far as I am concered and the rifle is light enough for me to carry all day.It is comfortable slung over my shoulder and easeily craddled in my arms for still hunting.I think the balance has a lot to do with the handleing of it.
With three pellets, the recoil wasn't bad at all.I'd say about like a 30-06 with a 150 gr. bullet or maybe even a 270 win. shooting a 150 gr. bullet.
I believe that my choice was a good one and this rifle fits me fine and shoots very well. It's a keeper.

The Omega worked on a deer this season but I sure don't know about those 295 gr.powerbelt hollow points. The exit hole was the size of a baseball. It was a 30 yard shot.

Thought I posted this days ago but appears not to have gone through...
If you get sick of grease on the breechplug, try plumber's teflon tape.  Guaranteed not to seize, and a lot less messy.  Just need to clean out the threads in the barrel every 3-4 removals to get the hairs of leftover tape out.  Use sparingly (1 layer thick).
