Range Report- New .280 Handi
« on: January 02, 2006, 05:32:21 AM »
Finally had a chance to shoot my new Handi- .280/palletwood.

Didn't have time to do all the polishing (was running out of daylight), so I just scrubbed the bore and chamber with Hoppe's #9 and swirled some extra flannel patches in the chamber and hoped for the best.  I did do the rubber washer trick, mounted an Aetec 2.8-10 with Leupold Rifleman high rings and went to the range.

30 rounds so far, not one single failure-to-eject or any other problem.

Best group at 100 was .910"-- I'll take that any day from an out-of-the-box rifle with factory ammo!  All I could find that I was willing to pay for were Rem 150 loads, will work up some loads for this rifle in February when the season's over.

Trigger's creepy with quite a bit of overtravel, but not too heavy and not uncomfortable at all.

I'll be off all week to hunt and our season in Alabama runs through Jan 31, so with some luck maybe I can take a deer or two with it this season.

   MOA for $200!!

Thanks Mitchell.

I forgot to add that recoil was surprisingly light.  I'd expected to get smacked a bit from a round in this class in gun this light.  No doubt the 26" barrel is a big factor in that.  That may change some when I get some loads going, but I think it'll still be comfortable.

It's not quite as quick-handling as my .30-30 and .45-70 NEF's, but it does feel good.  The places I have in mind for this rifle probably won't require that anyway, but it still comes to the shoulder quickly and target aquisition with the scope on the lower powers is -right-there-.  I only use the higher magnifications at the range anyway.

I think that the 280 is the only barrel that shoots 1 1/2" or less, consisitantly with no failures to eject.Mine shoots the 150 gr. corlokts through the chrono at 2975 fps.,and some of the guy's are getting more with handloads. Digger

Sounds like a successful outing already with your new 280. Like the others, good luck deer hunting! Post not only pics of your deer, but the rifle, too.

The .280 is really the unsung hero in the H&R barrel lineup, it can do it all!! Those of us that have them love them....<><....

Congrats 405 on your new handi rifle and good luck deer hunting. Your right MOA for $200.00 is very sweet.
