New Garmin 60Cx and 60CSx
« on: January 01, 2006, 08:28:39 PM »
I just checked out ProBass shop and they are listing two new Garmin models with expandable flash memory.  The highly respected 60 models will now come with a Flashcard.  Outstanding!  The word is that other Garmin color models will also get the x.

It had to happen.  And I have no doubt that we will see handheld gps units over one GB of memory within the next couple of years.  The market place competition will make it happen.  I believe Popular Science said 2006 is the year of the gps.

These units will use the new SiRFstarIII chipset.  This super fast unit will bring up the first sattelite in one second.  The units are suppose to work inside buildings and autos.  The new 60Cx and other Garmin x units appear to make a big leap out in front of the current colored Legend, Vista, 60C/60CS, 76C and 76CS.  The new units will provide for better reception under heavy tree canopy.  But you will not get this at the price of the basic eTrex or eXplorist.  ProBass Shop list the 60Cx at $449.

You can expect to see this new chipset in cellphone-gps units.

TomTom is also using this chipset.  A product of interest to PDA owners is the TomTom Navigator 5, Bluetooth unit.  It gives you a gps that interfaces with your PDA without wires.  Check out the TomTom web page for units that work with the TomTom unit.

So will the price of the older models drop when the new units come on the market.  Or will they disappear from the production line?
