How to get started?
« on: December 12, 2005, 01:17:50 AM »
anyone out there using a traditional bow for hunting deer? I am getting an itch for this and would like some direction on what to look for...I'll need a full set up for deer hunting next year. I do a lot of "spot and stalk" but also some stand hunting as well-I imagine size is a factor when hunting a ground blind or tree stand...

Thanks!

Dave

i use recurve...but i think id like long bow as well.  ive shot long bow enough to know that for me they are pretty forgiving.  but i do as you do....spot n stalk but mostly still hunting.  so i opted for recurve.  i shoot 55#@28"  my true draw is 29.5".  so i draw all of that.  im not a true traditionalist...i use string leaches for silencing and 2216 aluminum arrows.  my set up is more than adequate for deer n such.  i think a guy (or gal) could get down around 40#s and be effective at close ranges (ie 20 and under).  just make sure you are comfortable with your equipment.  if money isnt a huge issue...get a cheaper take down bow like a pse coyote (about 200.00)...then as you get your feet wet.....get yourself a premium bow that you feel fits you good and you can shoot well.  its easier to start with a less expensive bow and get practiced up before you shell our lots of $ for a dream catcher or black widow only to find it maight not be the perfect bow for ya.

or shoot a friends a bunch until you figure out where you want your comfort to be.  i lucked out.  i bought a martin mamba first off and then realized every bow ive tried since then hasn't been what i was looking for and that my mamba is the best fit for me.
