.405 Win ???????
« on: December 18, 2005, 07:50:42 AM »
Saw a show where a buffalo was shot using an Encore and this ammo. Dropped it fast. Anyone have any info on this load???? I'm looking to compliment my 30/06. Looking for something different. Would like something for large game like moose, elk, black bear, etc. Don't know if I need a 375 H&H or 416 Rigby!

The 405 Win is close to the 45-70 in my opinion, if I was going to look for something in the 405 Win class, I would just get the 45-70.  Look at the ballistics of them both and you will see the 45-70 will do anything the 405 Win will do and do it better. Sure the 375 H&H and 416 Rigby barrels are a bit on the heavy side for the animals you listed, but they can be down loaded to work just fine.  :D

redhawk1,

Thanks. Funny a 45/70 was my next question. I was just looking for something a little different. Don't always like to have the same as everyone else :-)

I've become addicted to my Encores

I think I'll pick one up. Ammo looks pretty easy to get and the ballistics are great for what ranges I'll shoot with this load. Better not let my wife find out, she might shoot me with it

I picked up 2 blued receivers, a 20 guage slug barrel, wood stock and fore arms for the 20 guage and my 12 guage slug gun, all this week   Oh well there goes my CHRISTmas bonus.

I'm with you CT Bowhunter, I had a rifle rechambered and rebored to .405 Winchester just for that very reason, just to have something different. Working on 2150-2200fps H4895 loads using the 350gr Barnes X-bullet which has a BC of .536 and SD of .296, ought to have an edge on the .45-70, which I also have. Data from Hodgdon and Ty Herring at Barnes tells me this is doable, just a matter of working up the load.

I've got a .405 Encore barrel from Van Horn shown below with Bullberry stock set.  I hear there are factory barrels for it now too.  I really like mine although the accuracy from my first 2 boxes of factory ammo was disappointing.  Handload cured that and now I am well pleased with the groups I get.  I haven't taken anything with it but am hoping to take it elk hunting next year in Colorado.
