I see these are rather new to the market. I myself am quite interested in them, but would like to know if anyone has shot them. Curious as to your long range groups from 100-200 yards.

Just picked up three boxes at Cabela's.  $10.99 per box.  I plan to give them a try on Wed or Thurs.  I shoot a Marlin 512 Slugmaster and a Rem 870 Cantilever slug.  I'll post my results.

Over 2 bucks a round? They should gut your deer and drag them back for that price. BTW, anyone trying these at 200 yards is going to leave alot of wounded deer running around.

GLC,

Did you get a chance yet to shoot these? If so, how'd it go?

Have not shot them yet.  Work has interupted my shooting habits and its been very rainy and windy here in PA of late.

Hopefully, early next week I'll get out to try them.  Plan to try them in my 870 Super Slug and my Marlin 512.

As far as the price of the ammo, it is what it is.  I don't like it but don't have much choice either.  There aren't many sabot slugs going for under $10 a box these days.  I'm not looking to make a 200 yard shot, just a very accurate 100 yard shot which certainly could be possible.  If I can do that, it makes me much more confident for the average 50-75 yard shot which I find to be the norm in my area.  I have no interest in wounding deer and won't shoot if conditions are not perfect.  I have a little more respect for animals than some. Also, some states and areas are limited to shotguns so the price of accurate slugs is a neccessary evil.

Thanks

Most sabot slugs are usually very accurate at longer ranges. But 200 yards? These Hornadys being new on the market, probably need a little testing. Better shoot a few groups at the longer ranges. Just because a gun shoots, say 2" groups at 100 yards, doesn't mean it will shoot 3" groups at 150 or 4" groups at 200. At some point the slug might become totally unstable, and not even print on the paper.
By the way, I find the Winchester BRI slugs to be about as accurate as anything else, and I can usually find them on sale at Dick's or Gander mountain for 7.99. When they are, I stock up.

Got out to shoot today.  I shot my Marlin 512 slugmaster.  It is a bolt action shot gun, 21" rifled barrel with 1-28" twist.  I have a 2X7 Nikon shotgun scope mounted on this gun.  This shotgun is my best sabot shooter and my go-to stand deer hunting gun where I have to use shotgun slugs.  I shot it off of a solid bench at my club, using a pedestal front rest and sandbag rear.  I held pretty tight back and down on the gun to minimize jump.  Weather was partly cloudy, about 45 degrees, light, breezy wind in the area, but our shotgun range is somewhat protected by a hillside on one side of the range and trees on the other.  I don't think wind was a factor today.

I started off with some 2 3/4" Remington Copper solids, known good shooters in my Marlin.  I shot two three-shot groups at 50 yards to check my zero from last year.  Both groups were cloverleafs at that range about 2 1/2" high over the bull.

I then shot Copper solids at 100 yards. I put four shots into 1 7/8" with the fifth shot opening the group up to a total of 2 1/4".  Dead center at 100 yards.

I have only 15 of the Hornady SST slugs available to shoot since I only bought three boxes.  Cabela's sold out of them since I picked the last ones up.  They didn't have many to begin with it seems.

Using the SST's, I shot three shots at 50 yards into one ragged hole.  I then fired five more at 100 yards.  My group at 100 yards measured 2 1/2" for the first four shots with the last shot making the group 3 1/4"

The SST's printed about 2" higher compared to the Copper Solid group, probably due to the higher velocity.  Recoil was noticably more than the Copper solids but not uncomfortably so.  I'm going to try the rest of the shells in my 870 Superslug next time I get out to shoot.

I'm going to hunt with the Copper Solids since they are readily available and shoot better than the SST's.  Granted, the testing was pretty limited, but that's what happened today.

If anyone else shoots them at distance, please post.  Interested in 100 yard groups, type of gun, conditions, etc.

Thanks for the report, GLC. It's always nice to hear field reports on newer ammo or gear.

2-3" groups @ 100 yards. Wow, impressive.

I finally got to shoot my Remington 870 with the Superslug 23" barrel.  I used up the last of my SST's.

The 50 yard group was pretty tight, two shots nearly touching.

I shot my last five shots at 100 yards.

Five carefully fired shots off the bench measured 3 3/8" but four of the five measured right at 1 3/4"!

The SST's seem pretty impressive.  Too bad they are hard to find and priced higher than other brands.

Anybody else shoot any?

Gotta be more people trying them than just me and sk330lc......

I haven't seen a single box of them around me.  I've learned from experience to be careful with the new slugs that are hard to find.  When the Rem Buckhammers came out, they shot great in my A-Bolt but were hard to find.  I remember making several visits to find a few boxes near hunting season.  Not fun driving around at $2.50/gal to buy $10/box shells:)

I might try these slugs this summer if I start seeing them on shelves with any regularity.  But really is a plastic tipped, pointy bullet going to make this slug last longer than the H2K?  Time will tell.

I just stick with the old Lightfield Hybred in 2 3/4".  They shoot well in my gun and are easy to find, sometimes on sale.  Also a proven performer on game which is as important as accuracy.

Finally made it back to the range Saterday!
Conditions Very windy !!!
Encore 26" rifled slug barrel ..
Three shot group 2 1/4"  dead on @100 yards...
I felt this to be very good considering, the wind gusts up to 40 MPH!
I tried to wait till it would dye down before shooting But It was hard to do.
Hopefully next year these slugs will be easer to come by. For this year I'll stick with the Federal Barnes expanders. I've been getting 1 1/2" groups consistently, @100 yards with them out of the old Encore ..

If anyone is looking for Hornady SST slugs, Midsouth Shooters Supply has them for 9.28 a box, which beats Cabelas sale price, for sure.
http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000038623
Does anyone know where I can find some of Remingtons core lokt bonded slugs? Midsouth doesn't carry them, and I can't seem to locate any anywhere?
Sincerely,
 Garry

Thank you Marylandeer, I appreciate the trouble you went to. I want to order some of the Remingtons and the SST's and do some comparison testing this spring.

I did some more testing with these slugs after my last post ...
using my 26" encore I lapped the barrel with JB bore paste ...   My groups with the sst's are now 1 1/4" @ 100 yards and 1 3/4" @ 150
The funny thing is, My groups with the  Federal Barnes slug opened up a little bit .

Any how I used the Hornady SST's for my Ohio Hunt this year. I Killed a Fine 8 Point with AN 18" spread  with long Lines . My best buck so far, wish I had a scanner to post a Pic.    The kill shot was @ about 65 yards through the Neck ..   It made a mess of the neck...    I would recomend these slugs to anyone If there gun will shoot them...
