I've no trouble with the saftey being between my ears, but an inquiring mind wants to know, does my 1946 M44 Mosin-Nagant have a saftey I can't find???

Yes, it does. Its hard to work, but its there. The round knob at the rear of the bolt is the safety. Pull it back hard, and turn counter clockwise to engage safety, opposite to fire.

Its somewhat easy to get it on, but its very hard to get it off.
For some reason I doubt the Soviet troops used it.

I think if I wanted to carry a MN on safe I would use the bolt. Having the bolt straight up is on safe, the bolt down is for firing. If the bolt isn't straight up the bolt will close and lock the action when the trigger is pulled.

The safety on a Mosin seems hard and awkward when you first try to use it.After awhile it gets kinda natural and easier with a little practice.The best way to engage or disengage it is to rest the butt stock of the rifle in the crook of the arm and pull against that to give you more leverage.After you practice that some it will seem easier and more natural.
Carrying a Mosin with the bolt up and a round chambered is a dangerous procedure.
A lot of people cite the need for a quick shot being the reason they feel the need for an easier safety.Truth is that it takes about 3 seconds to disengage the safety when you finally get used to it.If you are a safe hunter you aren't going to be taking "jump" shots anyway.Your shots are going to be careful and accurate so the necessity of an instant off safety is not important.

Did you take your bolt apart to clean it and lube the spring?? Some of these bolts are filled with crud when we first get these rifles. Then its a matter of getting the hang of pulling it a little back and turning it. I think its a good positive safety. I think the mosins and mausers have the best safeties there's no way they can fail.

The safety on the mosin makes it useless for hunting, IMHO. It is totally clumsy, even sitting in your living room. To put the rifle in the crook of your arm, your taking yourself out of the firing position. True, it takes about 3 seconds. That is alot of time just to click off the safety and then start aiming. It don't go no easier if your hands are cold either. I don't think the Russian army used it. I think they probably had kinda the same firing drill as the French, who built thier rifles without safeties. I think the Blackhawk Down movie has the Russian soldiers translation of safety.

The French didn't need safetys........what's the old saying about French rifles? Never fired and only dropped once! :-D
