Portable Bench Rest recommendation needed

Brother in law asked me today if I could recommend a portable Bench rest for around 100.00.  

Told him I use sandbags and was not familiar enough with any product to knowledgeably recommend one, but added I would ask on GBO for him.  

He shoots a .270

Does anyone in the know -  have any recommendations?

For $100, I'd suggest building your/his own from plywood and pipe (for the legs).  I used these plans, modified to suit me, and am extremely happy with the results:

I cut this one out of the top of an old Formica top dining room table.  I cut the rifle rest out of 2x6 material, and padded it with left over upholstery material.  I clamp the rest to the top with  “C” clamps to keep it from getting dumped.  Easy to load in the back of the pickup for a trip to the woods.


Easy to setup behind the pickup.  The rifle in this case is a 270 Winchester.



No direct cost.

I wish I could put pictures on here, but to much stupid. I made one from round and rectular tubeing and a boat seat. Total weight under 30 lbs., but I carry it in 4 pieces. In the back of the pick-up I do not fold up the legges, but for smaller space the legges fold up. It turns 360 dregres and the the rest also turns 360 plus has height adjustment for fround and rear of rifle.

MTM makes a nice economy bench and GBO Sponsor Midsouth Shooter's Supply has then and yeah the price is under $100 so fits your budget. It's not as soild as I prefer but it looks sturdy and a couple or three bags of shot would give it weight enough to be stable.

I got mine from Cabela's it's a fold up and solid as a rock especially when I put my 260 pounds on the seat of it. It is clearly not in the budget you have established tho. I think it runs around $225 these days. Back when I bought mine it was about half that price.

 I built one out of 2'x4' 3/4" plywood. Cut corner out so you are setting in cut out. Go to Depot or Lowes and get folding table legs $15. Add short tubes in the end of the legs to adjust hieght. Made some sandbags, and walaa. Less than $40. You take your favorite lawn chair and start shooting.

 I gave it to a member here. I will see if he can post a pict.

Black and Decker Workmate.  Cut a top any shape that suits you. (If the WM top is not big enough) Attache a 2 X2 or whatever you have. Wa-lah a multipurpose bench.  At one time, while living in an apartment I used it to reload on also.

I agree with the Black & Decker workmate. It is very stable and easy to move around.

I have a shooting buddy that is an outstanding welder and he builds benches.  He gave me the prototype so I have no idea what he sells them for, but they are rock-solid.  With removable legs, they are easy to transport around.  They're about the best portable bench I've ever used.  I'll try to get a picture of it later.

 I built one from a 2x4 sheet of 3/4 plywood. Cut one corner out to set behind. I screwed and glued 6" high 2x4 four boxes in the corners. Stick 2x4 legs in the boxes and drilled holes through box and leg. Stick dowel pins through box and legs. Pull the pins and the legs come out.  Seems to be solid and it fits in the trunk of my car.
