4895 for .270,25/06,.303
« on: January 02, 2006, 05:47:26 PM »
ok ....i have been useing a nice load of 38.4g of IMR4895  with 174g matchkings in my .303 for a few years now. Its a very accurate load, not blazing fast but not slow either, no signes of preasure either. i also am going to be reloading for my .270 and 25/06. I know that this powder is kind of fast burning, but i have seen some pretty fast loads with light bullets. I am planning on useing 90g, or 100g with the 270 ( varmints). and 130's for deer. I also plan on shooting 75g and 117g out of the 26/06. I know that the 4895 gives up a little velocity, but i will be useing less powder per shell, basicly I will be useing 10g-15g less per round than I would with 4350 or 4831, meaning i will get 20% more loads per pound of powder.  This will also simplify my reloading since i will be able to reload for 4 guns with one kind of powder, allowing me to rationalize buying in bulk, yes i am cheap. I am baseing this plan on my ability to work up accurate loads. Any comments of ideas on this matter?

There is NOTHING wrong at all with your use of IMR 4895 powder for several cartridges for convenience and economy if accuracy and velocity are acceptable for YOU.

And, you already know that using only one powder sacrifices some velocity and performance.

Years ago, cheap surplus 4895, 4831 powders were available for reloading.  Bruce Hodgden established his business on military surplus powders.  For a couple of generations of reloaders and shooters after WWII, surplus ammo, powder, bullets, and primers was about all they used.

As a matter of fact, many reloaders under age 30 don't think along the lines of economy and standardized loads and fall into the trap that component manufacturers set for us.  Infinite variety in the component combinations is NOT what many shooter want!  Some of us are happy with standardized loads using standardized components!

I like to keep things as simple as possible when reloading , I use Bullseye and Unique for handguns.

For rifle i use IMR 4895 and BLC2 .

The 4895 i use for everthing from 223 Rem. to 270 Win. to 30/06 Spring. and it works well , You just need to find a load that will do what you want it to .

This way i can buy 8Lbs at a time .  :D
