Wood or synthetic--Which is more accurate?
« on: January 03, 2006, 10:30:52 AM »
I'm considering buying another new Handi in either 30-06, .270, or 7mm-08. I'm leaning towards the 7-08. My question is this, are the wood stocks as a whole more accurate than the synthetics, or vice versa, or does it differ from gun to gun? Also, is the accuracy of the stainless barrels any different from the blued?

Yes they are, manufacture of SS and button rifling produce more dimensional consistent bores. Speciall when they are not stress relieved before contouring like H&R is doing. There are several processes that are omited at H&R. See the movie on the sticky.

Lets just say bar stock in SS is more consistent and can be deep hole drilled with out first turning it and truing the barstock. ( they all should be)

Due to its molicular structure it absorbes less stress during button rifling and subsiquent contouring will not change the interior of the bore as much as chrome moly steel. Good barrels are all stress relieved before contouring regardless of the material. The micro shallow grooves in Handi"s are designed to produce less stress and enhances batrell dimensioal quality a bit further.

A laminated wood forearm will give you the best chance for a lasting bedding job. The post tensioned beam principle has given me super accuracy.

This principle is used on all Ruger #! rifles. Old Bill Ruger sure knew how to design an accurate single shot. Also straight wood will loose the tension not so with laminated wood. Of course this is not a new idea, only the way Mr. Ruger made it work on the #1.

I can't say about the stainless as I don't have one in a NEF. I do have in centerfire a 30-30, 22H, 45-70, in wood and a 243 laminated. The 30-30 and the hornet leave a lot to be desired the 45-70 is alright and the 243 is great. I also have a 44 mag and a 357 max in plastic while the 44 is ok the 357 mag is great. I don't know if any of this has to do with wood plastic or just plan dumb luck. I will admit I have not tried much with trying to tune up the 30-30, 45-70, or the 44. The 243 is just like I got it and had reamed out a 357 mag to a max witch made a huge difference. I also have four rem fires a 22mag laminated and 17hmr, 17 M2 and a 22lr all are plastic and all are very good out of the box.
