Moving out west with long guns
« on: January 04, 2006, 07:36:41 AM »
Hi all,

Soon i'll be moving out west with a handful of long guns.  Does anyone know of any state laws pertaining to storage of guns in a vehicle along the way from Virginia to Idaho??

The moving company won't ship 'em, nor will they ship the gunpowder or primers (which i understand) or even ammo.  Thus, i will be loaded for bear on the trip out...

Moving companies do move guns all the time, maybe not knowingly, though.  Here's a previous thread from the Around the Pot Belly Stove forum and links....

thanks Quickd!

It seems as though i'll be fine by having them in my trunk.

I don't have any handguns, but do have a concealed carry permit in case i want to have a rifle or shotgun, or both, in the seat beside me!

when I did some moving while in college I researched the topic thoroughly.  Best way is to have your guns in cases that are locked either with case locks or padlocks.  Also, do not have any ammunition locked in the cases with the guns, if you can lock them in a seperate container, even a shooting bag.   Then, put the whole works in the trunk, if they don't fit put them in a place that isn't reachable from the driver's seat.  These recommendations should keep you clear all over.  I know this seems like overkill and pretty silly and it is.  But nobody wants any type of problem with the law because of guns...  Good luck!

Did I miss anything?????

the Federal Gun Owners Protection Act(circa '86?) protects you as you travel interstate so long as the firearms are unloaded, securely encased, and in the truck of your car.  If your vehicle doesn't have a trunk, the most inaccessable location is where you need to keep them.

thanks to everyone for the input.  Looks like things are pretty straightforward. I have some pieces i might ship and definitely some i'll keep with.

MtJerry, sounds like a plan.  If the weather is good, i'll most assuredly stop by.  Would you bring a bone for my German Pointer as well?

I think you'll be find on the guns, maybe not so fine on the powder and primers. I'd drive so I didn't get pulled over for a violation that might prompt a search. Transporting the powder and primers without proper hazmat placards over such a distance is almost certainly a federal violation.

Welcome to Idaho I am pretty sure you'll love it here. State Troopers here are real reasonable about guns and cars, but real Sh*t He*ds about speeding. I live in S.E. Idaho and most cars and all pickups have a rifle in them somewhere.

I duuno graybeard,he's not driving a commercial vehicle,so he's probably exempt.....may also depend on the QUANTITY of powder.....as far as I know, you could come to georgia and buy all the gunpowder you could carry as well as all the guns you could tote and then go home.......I think he'll be fine

Every move that I have made the carrier packed and shipped the guns. Even if the company says they won't ship them - the driver may do it for you anyway.
To my knowledge it is legal for you to take them with you also, but some local rookie and an agressive DA may have different thoughts. To them it may be a gun running bust. The legal expenses and time to get things straightened out could be extensive. Drive like a saint!

Maybe it's just me but I would never trust my guns in the hands of a moving company. I've heard way to many horror stories about them ripping folks off and not compensating them. Graybeard probably said the most important thing. Don't drive in a manner such that you'll get stopped in the 1st place. I have always moved my stufff myself except for household goods and hold baggage in the Army. I even made two trips back and forth between Colorado and Delaware in a very over loaded F150 to avoid dealing with movers. Good luck out there. I never made it there but hear it's great.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

Check out packing.org for info you need.
Using government to make us all feel great is getting rather expensive don't you think?

I WOULDN'T TRUST ANY MOVING VANS EITHER!

sO FORM NOW ON KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT ABOUT WHAT IS IN YOUR STUFF TOO!

I moved from Georgia to Utah more than 25 years ago and didn't tell anyone I was doing so when moving my few guns.  Buried them DEEP in my trailor so they weren't easily seen or discovered.  Of ciourse I wasn't pulled over either!

If your have a wardrobe box full iof clothes or a dispac full of kitchen stuff, those may be tall enough to hide a gun case (some of them).  Other items highly tageted for theft by movers are tools.  So how do you plan to keep those DISCRETE!

AS YOU DRIVE YOURSELF WEST, WHY NOT "BURY" YOUR GUNS IN THE BOTTOM OF YOUR CAR TRUNK?  Or deep in your truck bed?

MOVING GUNS ACROSS COUNTRY ONCE you leave the LIBERAL EAST isn't rocket science.  Just use a little "care" and "common sense."  You ought to be okay.

Good luck and drive sensibly.  Stay at motels where your vehicles will be in VERY SECURE parking lots, like the other travelers staying there!

Moving out west with long guns
« Reply #21 on: January 05, 2006, 05:22:50 PM »
I spent 20 years in the military and moved every three years.  I moved all over the west and to Florida.  The movers moved my guns everytime, or at most of my guns.  I always kept three or four out for use along the way hunting with my Dad, Brothers, or friends.  If the movers take them make sure that every one is on the inventory by make, model, caliber, and serial number.  Never let the driver say, I'll take them, but we don't want them on the inventory. (that's a sure sign he is going to steal them)  If they are not on the inventory you have no proof that he ever had them.

My wife is a claims examiner for the federal government, her job is to reimburse families for damaged or stolen items by movers.  Guns and Prints are the main items that get stolen.  The drivers tell the customers that if the item goes on the inventory it tells a theif where and what the item is for them to steal.  Well it sounds good to the customer, but like I said if it's not on the inventory it never got shipped.

What I would personally do.  Forget the movers, lock the guns in gun cases, or put them in boxes like they came in and tape them shut.  (You can sometimes find them at gun shops, or at U-haul).  Then pack them under the bottom of all your stuff you are packing in the car or truck.  Take your time, don't do anything to get stopped, and just be your normal self.  Even if you get stopped there should be no trouble unless drugs are found in the car.  Then the whole world will fall apart.

I just finished a stint on the Grand Jury, a young fellow got stopped, his girl friend had a small amount of grass in her purse.  While I don't agree with smoking pot, it's not a big deal here in Alaska.  The problem came when the Troopers found his pistol and rifle in the vehicle.  They were in the trunk in a locked case, but that did not matter.  The mear fact that guns were present with the grass was enough to get him locked up, and turn it from a misdmeaner to a felony.  He will loose the guns, his car, and possiably spend time in jail.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
