Author Topic: Does a 7.5" 45/70 revolver have any advantage vs 454,et (Read 1392 times)

I recently saw a revolver in 45/70,it had a 7.5" barrel.
Does a revolver in that caliber[even in 10"] have any real advantage versus the same chambered in 454Casull,460S&W,etc.?

No, the .454 revolver is far more practical IMO. The .454 is smaller and lighter - ever handled a BFR? :shock: Performance-wise the .454 will do about anything the .45-70 will in the handgun with bullets under 400 grains. That said, some folks find the BFR pretty cool....

I agree, but the 45-70 will work under a lot less pressure.

I would think off the shelf ammo would be easier to find for the 45-70 as well. I guess that might depend were you are.

The bfr is a big revolver but easy to get used to. The 45/70 round works at 2/3 less pressure. The recoli is greatly reduced not only by the size of the gun/weight but the extra case capasity that allows recoil to be spread out over a longer period of time. The 45/70 is plain fun to shoot. The only alternitive is a freedo arms 454.. big..big..big money. for the serious pistolero. The BFR is built like a tank. The extra heft means you can shoot it a lot more before it shoots out(loosens up). The 454 is a excelent round but the gun has to be built for it. I think the 45/70 is more practial and you can even upgrade to the extremley potent 450 marlin. Don't let the size of the 3 inch cylinder fool you. Visit Magnum reaserch.

i do think the 45 70 in a revolver is impractical.

BUT... it does have one specific advantage over the 454....bullet weight. outside of that, the 454 is better suited to a revolver.

after the bad experince I had with the only bfr i owned a 480 if have to pick the 4570 it would make a much better boat anchor.

One bad experience does not mean all are bad. I have a 500 Mag in a BFR and it is a great gun. It has the large cylinder and I have almost 3000 rounds down the tube.

I have a 14" contender barrel in 45/70. I load my own but have shot full house loads out it before and you talk about recoil. Those rounds had it. Other then those it doesn't recoil to bad. Oh by the way when I shot those full house loads I broke a couple springs in my action had to send it back to the factory for repair.

The S&W 500 doesn't recoil bad at all. The biggest bullets I've shot is the 500gr bullets At 1420 fps. Good shooting to ya!

yes.. What I meant was, " If you did not like the BFR Platform, Then the Freedom Arms is the only real competior,, except for custom built big money guns.. Magnum reaserch makes the BFR available in numerous calibers as well as the .454 Casuall. The Freedom Arms is awesome just out of the price range for most.

one more point. the s&w 460 will easily shoot the 454. more weight, very accurate and can go down to 45 colt or up to the 460. lots of choices there. easy to scope if you're so inclined, too.
that said i have taken lots more with my bfr in 45-70. i just love it. 300gr jhp bullets at honest 1700 fps chronographed will get any job done. the recoil is a lot less sharp than the 454 and it is accurate.

I have a Taurus raging bull in .454, shoots straight, and I like the grip a lot better than the BFR or the FA. the .45-70 puts out a little more power than the .454 - it's a lot bigger in size, and also more expensive of course. The .460 just blows away everything else, power, trajectory, everything, but is a whole helluva lot more expensive. For hunting, the .454 is the most practical if you take in performance, price, and handling. If you just want pure performance, the .460 is the best choice. A lot of people talk about using the .500 for hunting, but the .500 looses a lot of power very quickly, so it ain't good for a whole lot, mostly to prove you have the biggest balls in the state :-D , but there ain't anything wrong with that.
