Mortar Bed Dimensions for Confederate 12 pounder
« on: January 02, 2006, 07:42:44 PM »
Hey Guys,
I've ordered a Repro Tredegar 12 pounder tube from James West in Virginia.  I'm going to build the bed myself and wondered if anyone knows where I can find the exact dimensions for this mortar bed.  I plan on a two piece bed using white oak.  Any suggestions of expertise would be greatly appreciated.  I'm a new guy to this so if I'm screwed up, please let me know.
Thanks,
Matt Gray

Correct me if I'm wrong (it happened once before in 1952  :?  ) but do I not recall that there aren't any 12 pounders that survived?  That means you'll be working from someone's drawings.  Someone here should be able to come up with a set or a source.

Tim,
You're correct from what I've read.  No originals survived.  Was just wondering if there was some documentation out there in the world that detailed the exact dimensions of this historic piece of Confederate Weaponry.  Any help or direction would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt Gray

You should call Don Lutz. He and his wife run AOP. He can sometimes find unusual plans and drawings. Good luck!

If you are buying a tube from James West ask him to send you a set of plans with the tube.  I got my plans  from  his brother  Robert West 757-868-0570.  The Reb mortars used Southern pine for a base.  West's plans call for  oak, but then also says use any wood.  Most likly "any wood" would be authentic .

Thanks,
Matt
