Jeff

I think you can still get the blued guide gun in  ported or plain. I have the blued with ported barrel and one in Stainless non ported. The only reason i bought the ported barreled guide gun is I got a good deal on it. If you are looking for one just keep your eyes  open and you might find one on the net, or at a gun show thats where i picked mine up. Good luck ..........Joe.......

i have found a like new one with port for 100.00 cheaper,
if anyone can tell me before i lose the used deal it would much appreceated..

Here is one at Guns America for $449.00

1895G with porting Awesome! Nice Marlin 1895G lever action, 45-70, ported, 18", cross bolt safety, Williams peep sight, NO ORIGINAL SIGHTS, box, 99%, been shot 20 rounds, ser#00039639, no other pictures, serious only please, I only accept certified funds such as money order or cashiers checks, add 3% for credit card, $25.00 shipping.

Then of course you could just buy a NIB one from Wal-Mart
Marlin 1895G Big Bore Lever Action Rifle 45-70 then send it in to Marlin direct and have them for a small fee swap the barrel out for a ported one that is offered on the .450 Marlins which are the same .458 dia.

Personally I wouldn't own a ported one or shoot around anyone who was shooting one... I like what hearing I have left.  Many who have purchased ported ones have either sent them in for a straight barrel or just sold them off... as reported, they are just plainly too loud.

The Montanan is sure right about the ported 95s being to loud, I haven't made up my mind what i am going to do with mine, Like i said in my first post i picked mine up for a song. In the mean time i shoot my Stainless 95 All the time and am enjoying it . Back to the topic of porting a 1895 45-70 you might want to think about it because most people don't like the the extra noise and i can't see where it helps that much as far as recoil goes. Good luck Jeff..............Joe.............

well i got my guide gun today a sweet used one with the ported barrel this gun is in 99.9% there isnt a mark on it anywhere !! the guy i bought it from had shot it 5 times, this gun is like brand new and i feel like i stole it from the guy,
well as soon as i got it home i had to see and hear what the ported barrel had to say.. i didnt think it was loud at all,no louder than any of my other rifles... i only shot it 4 times at 50 yards and my shots keyholed an inch high over the bull.... with 300 gr. remingtons... man i cant wait to play with this thing some more!!!!!!!!!

It's been a year now since I purchased my 1895GS. I can remember hearing stories about noise with the ported versions, so I specifically wanted an unported version. However, if I'm remembering correctly, it was a problem with noise for other people at the range, not the shooter himself.

JEFF WARD2 - I've got the same rifle and I don't find it any louder than my brother-in-law's 1895 with the 22" barrel and the ports do help with the muzzle lift. Let's face it, ANY 45-70 is gonna be loud!  :-D  CEJ...

Hi Jeff - I roll my own now but I have used Federal 300 grainers for sighting in my AO peep sights with good results. My handloads will shoot 3 shot cloverleafs at 100 yards with the Leupold scout scope set up. You'll just need to pick up some different brands and see what your rifle likes best. A number of people like the PMC 350 grain factory loads. Good luck.. CEJ

There were two problems that arose with the ported barrels.

The first was noise.  A nuisance and injurious to your hearing and that of those around you.  The noise does seem to be worse for bystanders off to the side than for people directly behind the rifle, including the shooter.

The second was that the ports caused ejecta to hit other shooters on the firing line.  I've been hit repeatedly in the back of the neck by a Marlin shooter 2 benches away.  I don't know what hit me, unburnt powder of scrapings off the bullet, but I am very glad I was wearing protective glasses and had my back turned.  After the third time I had to ask the shooter to stop.  Others at my club had the same problem.

At my range they now have a rule that shooters using ported firearms must notify everyone else on the firing line before shooting. If anyone objects the ported firearm cannot be shot.  That's how seriously the club takes the noise and ejecta issues.   Safety first.

If you plan to do much shooting at a range you might want to check into their rules.

I got hit with shrapnel from the ports as well from another shooter during a hunt.  He shot safely, but the shards of jacket (I think) gashed me below the eye.  I was lucky.  Something to keep in mind and always wear eye protection!

I think Marlin stopped porting the barrels in January of 2002.  You can determine the year of manufacture by taiking the first two digits of the serial number, subtract them from 100 and add 1900 or 2000 as appropriate.

I had a GG with ports and sold it.  I shot well but was brutal with its report. I bought a 1895 Cowboy which will shoot the same hot rounds if you want to and has the advantage, at least for me, of having a 24" barrel and the longer sight radius that goes with it.  I find it much more pleasant to shoot with either period correct, low pressure rounds and Buffalo Bore cannon rounds.
