.25-06 in stevens or savage 110, and what factory loads?
« on: January 03, 2006, 04:58:28 PM »
I'm having trouble convincing myself NOT to get a stevens or savage in .25-06 for whitetail and pdogs. My question now is who has experience with these rifles in this calibers and where should I start in looking for factory loads for primarily whitetail, and possibly Pdogs.

I'm worried that I may be getting a reputation for raising pointless conjecture :)  But I'm almost convinced that it's time for a new and well tuned hunting rifle. All have to do is make up my mind, and get approval from my purchasing manager... (my wife  :-D )... although I'm happy to report that she's starting to take serious interest in shooting and hunting........ ramble... ramble.... ramble.... :D

DavOh, I have the stevens 200 in 25-06. I have shot the 117 gr BTSP and 117 gr speer hotcore. The first will stay in a nickle at 100 and the fed. loaded hotcores will stay in a dime at 100. I have done nothing to this rifle except shoot it. Also tried the 100 gr. BT. Not bad either. IMO the 200 is a deal that will be tough to beat. About 50% of the 200 owners say that the triggers need work, mine is fine.
If purchasing has allready approved then it's a NO BRAINER !!!! Go for it. I don't think you will be dissapointed. Good luck and happy huntin DM

ps- have not had the chance to strike a hide yet, but have one more shot this weekend on a 2 day late firearm hunt on the eastern shore of Maryland. Had 3 new toys for this year and have taken 10 deer, but seem to allways have differant gun than 200 25-06 when opportunity knocked.

I use a savage 110 tactical for prarie dogs. I shoot a 100gr Sierra soft point with amazing accuracy. It also shoots the remington 100gr sp "in the green box" exactly the same as my load. I can't tell any difference. I did need to re-stock the rifle though. The plastic crap it came with wasn't worth spit. Put it in a Choate Varment stock and it works great. If I were to do it again I would get it with the laminated stock. (not sure what model that is).   KN

I put a Timney trigger in mine, it's sweet now. Was probably ok before, but I like to play. I'd use any soft point ammo in it for Whitetail, it's not like they need a premium bullet in Texas.
