Maximum BP charge
« on: January 08, 2006, 08:13:51 PM »
I was in a conversation with a guy who claimed that if you filled the barrel of your muzzleloader almost to the muzzle--leaving room for a patched ball--with BP, the gun would not blow up but would fire with a huge muzzle flash.

Has anyone ever tried this?

I hope to God you were not shooting next to him at the range. I have heard of that one before but I don't know anyone that would be stupid enough to see first hand. I would keep my distance from that guy.

jmf,

I would not hold my breath on a response, I imagine that those who have tried will not be able to respond.

However I read somethig from a top notch company. Not sure but I think it was T/C or Hogdon.  They stated this myth was based on the fact that some fealt black powder could only develop a ??? max psi. The company had been conducting R&D testing on a new product. They started to increase load sizes to see if this myth was true. They deturmined that as far as in ml application no max psi limit was obtained with black powder. In fact, at one point muzzle fps stoped increasing and started to decrease but psi kept climbing.

I think in my case I would need exceed the manufactures recomended load by 24 times just to feal the barrel.
No thanks!!! I will stay between 95 and 115.

JMF,

In my reply I was not sure of the source of infomation that disscredited black powder only reaching a undetermined psi level thus it is imposible to overload a ml.  The source of the info that disscredits that notion can be found in a Thompson 209x50 owners manual Page 25.

They state "there testing deturmend this theory is completely unfounded".  "At no time was there any indication of a leveling off of pressure". "Heavier loading showed marked increases in pressure and substantially more recoil for only minor gains in velocity".
