Author Topic: Powerbelts, Lube Pegs? (Read 713 times)

Read somewhere on another post that some shooters pull the sabot and lube the peg on powerbelts. Has anyone experimented to any degree with lubed verses not lubed? Or any other little secrets that may improve their performance in my rifle? I'm using 295 areotips with black powder in a traditions thunder bolt. Thanks for any help.

I tried the PB bullets and could not get consistent accuracy. I would get maybe 2 or 3 good shots and then miss the posters board. Walking back and forth to target I found some of the plastic seats 30yd down range and some laying at the target at 100yds. I had a 4x8 plywood that the posterboard was on some bullets missed by 2ft. I switched to XTP240gr bullets and got 1.5'' group with no wild shots. Later I heard that you can lube the post and get better results and that t7 is so hot it can melt the plastic to the post with magnum charges. Some get great results with the PB's I gave up before I heard of the tricks. Anyway I have since moved to the barnes spitfire 285gr sabot this is the best ML bullet on the planet in my opinion. Rifle performance bullet with a ML. All 3 of my ML's gave me my best groups ever with 90grs t7 3f.

i used the 295gr. hp. power belt, it shot well but when i shot at a sow not 30feet from me. some how i missed! i,m no daniel boon but it was an easy shot that i had plenty of time for! it was suggested, that once loaded, the bullet can pull loose from the belt and slide down the barrel!? i dont know if this is what happened, or not. but i,m a fair shot, and the sow didnt drop blood or a single hair. has anyone had this happen?

just why would you want to. i haven't seen a ml that didn't shoot them good, there were 5-6 guys at my house this season that claimed there guns wouldn't group , and after i shot pb's in there ml's they saw different.

I have not shot the 295gr pb but spent allot of money working with the 223gr and 245gr. I only found one sabot/ring at the target. The bullets point of impact did not seem to change that much. But my gun dose not shot a good group with them anyway. But six inches at 100 is a dead pig at 30 feet.

I have seen the "areo tip" stuck to my bullet starter after loading one. If the tip would have not stayed attatched to the starter and droped back down into the bore with out my knowledge that may cause some wacky results.

I have shot 6 bucks with 295, cj, hp... 1 shot kills with no walkoff.
Took me about 5 shots to zero originally, in each gun (CVA, Huntsman).
Never thought of lubing pegs, or changing anything. I am not a range guy, except to zero. I would not use anything other than 90gr 777.
Range on deer = 20 - 80 yds, el cheapo Low power scopes.

There is no need to do it. Some think it affects the flight if it stays on. I never had any problems with the PB's. I switch to Precision rifle's bullets for an experiment and liked them, and now that is all I will shoot in my Encore. 195 gr. DC duplex from Precision rifle. .

Is that Encore 209x45 or 209x50 ?

What powder and volume do you use with the 195gr ?

I got good and or ok results with a few of the PR .40 bullets. I never tryed the .357.

My 209x50 seems to have a sweet tooth for the larger .451 and .452 cal bullets. It has never done as well with .429 or less.
I would like to work up a nice load under 250gr.

I have a 50 cal Encore. I am using 90 gr. of loose triple7, but two triple7 pellets gives me the same point of impact. I have switched to the powder because I got a great deal on it. I paid $9.00 a pound and got 7 pounds.
The 195 gr. PR bullets I use are the DC duplex, they have 2 sabots. I am going to work up some heavier loads with this bullet to see if I can make it a 200 plus yard muzzleloader. I will stay within the T/C recommendations.

The penetration of these bullets is great. This year on opening day of Muzzleloader season, I took 2 bucks with one shot. I did not believe it nether did my buddies. But they only heard one shot and I told them I only took one shot. I got a 9 point and a 5 point behind him in the woods.
The entrance hole in the second buck was about 2 inches wide and it was under the skin on the opposite side of the second buck. It was the size of a half dollar and weighed 87 gr. Not bad for a 195 gr. bullet after all that penetration. I got the 9 point mounted and the 5 point is going to be a skull mount. I did not see the second buck standing behind the first buck. I just thought it was one deer. Good thing I had tags for both.
