Pinnacle in a C&B revolver
« on: November 24, 2005, 04:19:34 AM »
Has anybody used this powder in their C&B revolvers? I can only shoot about 3 cylinders before my 1858 Remington binds up and needs to be cleaned using 3Fg GOEX BP.

I was wondering if the less fowling advertised by GOEX would allow me to shoot a lot longer before needing to tear the gun apart.

You using a greased wad under the ball, or slathering lubricant over the ball?
In my experience, it makes a difference.
When I use a greased felt wad, my revolver stays cleaner. I can understand how the bore might, but I can't explain how that wad makes a difference on the base pin, yet it seems to.
Also, on my Remington I coat the base pin and rear of cylinder rather heavily with CVA Grease Patch. I think Crisco or Bore Butter would do as well; dunno, never tried them.
I also coat the sides of the hammer and hammer channel in the frame, to keep the hammer from sticking in the frame during cocking.
I remain convinced that the lubricant recipe I found in a 1943 American Rifleman is the best I've found for lubricating felt wads, bullets, patches and nearly any black powder application.
The recipe is 1 part canning paraffin, 1 part mutton tallow and 1/2 part beeswax. All measurements are by weight, not volume.
This results in a fairly stiff, waxy lubricant. According to the article, this is what the factories used for years to lubricate heeled bullets such as the .22 rimfire, .32 Long and Short Colt, .38 Long Colt, .41 Long Colt and .237 Gatofeo Yowling ZX-500 Ridiculously Short Turbo Magnum.
Sorry ... just wanted to see if you were paying attention there ...
But seriously, since I teamed this lubricant with a good felt wad I rarely put lubricant over the ball.
In my Colt 2nd generation 1851 Navy I can usually go 5 or 6 cylinderfuls before I have to stop and clean --- and I don't have to clean the bore because the wad keeps it quite clean.
In my Uberti-made Remington .44 I go 4 or 5 cylinderfuls before I have to do some lubricant touch-up on the base pin, sides of the hammer, rear of cylinder and hammer channel in the frame. Again, I usually don't clean the bore because the wad with that wonderful lubricant keeps it clean.
I know I"ve been all over the internet in various message boards extolling the virtues of the above lubricant but really, I can't praise it enough.
I'm sure after I've left this world someone will step up to my tombstone and wonder why, "1 part paraffin, 1 part mutton tallow and 1/2 part beeswax" are etched on it!  :)

Yup, I have been using a 30gr load of Pinnacle in C&B. It has been in ROAs though. I always lube the pin in front of the cylinder and in the back too a couple of drops every few stages (3 cylinders). I break from the pack in that I do not use ballistol any more, but have had great luck with good ol' Breakfree CLP. I use it for everything including barrel lubing after cleaning. BTW, Pinnacle cleans up as good as APP. Makes a ton of smoke and the only fault I can find with it is that there is no flames.
To go further and since I only shoot cowboy action, I do not use a wad either and you will find that Pinnacle fouling stays soft in weather down to freezing, below that I can't say.

Gatofeo, where in the world would I buy Mutton Tallow? Is it available on line? Your recipe sounds like it would work just fine and likely is is 1/10 the cost of Bore Butter, but I haven't a clue where to look for the tallow.

Try plastilube on your base pin. It's by far the best lube I've found for this. When I used other greases or oils I always had my cylinder on my 1858 Remington bind up bad. You can shoot it a lot with one application of plastilube and one little capsule of it will last multiple times to the range because it won't take very much just to put on the base pin. Generous but not excessive applications. Also, I've just been using crisco over the for a sealer in eash chamber and I havent tried the felt wads yet.
The link is mostly to show what it looks like. There should be several sources for it. Maybe even local gun shops.
Give this stuff a try. You won't be disapointed.

long,
I had a passing interest in the new powder until I read the Cumpston article on it. Now my interest has passed. It does not look like an improvement over Pyrodex. At least Pyrodex gives much lower velocity spreads.

If they keep researching new alternatives sooner or later they are bound to invent "SMOKELESS" powder :-D
