44 factory loads

There are several excellent factory loads for the 44 these days.  I would say at the top of the list for deer would be hornady's 240gr xtp, Remington's 275gr. core lokt, and Speer's 270gr. gold dot.

what would be the effective range of the 240 gr. xtp's?

The effective range will be how far you can hit where you need to with them.  I handload the 240 XTP in my .44s and I've killed deer outpast 100 yards with this bullet.  My loads are the standard 24.0 grains of WW296 or 21.0 grains of 2400 under this weight bullet.

I have really gotten attached to the Speer Gold Dot 270 gr GDSP.  I use the WC820 pull down powder (H108).  I have gotten 1332 fps from my 629 S&W Classic (6&1/2" barrel).  It is very consistant with a SD of 2.0 and a .760" group at 50 yards.

I originally got this bullet for hog hunting, but now use it for all large game.
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

what is bullet performence like at 100 yards.  Did you get good expansion? Did you get a pass through? Thats what I mean by effective range.

At 100 yards, the bullet is slowing down and will penetrate more than expand.  I would not got all hung up over expansion as you are starting out with a bullet diameter of nearly one-half inch.  Penetration is what you need over expansion.  Exit wounds usually create more blood loss than do entrance wounds.  A 240+ grain hard cast bullet of the proper design will work very well on deer as well as the jacketed bullets.

I believe this site would be worth reviewing: http://www.corbon.com/ You don't have to log-in, but on the upper left side of the page they list various types of ammunition, just choose under Categories: CORBON Hunter.

I have used the same bullet that Cor Bon uses, the Barnes XPB(expanding pistol bullet) in my reloading.  It is solid brass, opens quick, stays intact to produce superior wound channels and penetration--- http://www.barnesbullets.com/prodxpb-pistol.php

I have used the Hornady XTP in my .454 and saboted in my Remington 700ML, both 240g mag and the 250g non-mag.  Neither consistantly opened or stayed intact.  Not uncommon to find jacket fragments and bases left in the tissue.  Note, I use a chronograph and stayed within the bullet velocity specifications of the manufacturer for each accordingly.

Granted, I don't shoot a .44 but do believe that results will be similar.

In our area the Mag-Tech 240 spj work very well, as does the Winchester white box 240 hunting loads. I have been wanting a SBH Bisley Hunter to replace my SBH. My hang up is the small grips on Ruger revolvers. If you happen on to where larger grips can be had please pass along.

I saw a listing for Federal Pre. in 44 mag. 220 gr. Barnes Expander. Has anyone tried this load? I like the expander in my shotgun. I think it should be a great bullet out of the 44. If anyone has any experence with it I would appreciate some input.

Hoser1268,

The Barnes Expander is a Barnes XPB without the cannelure(crimp groove).  It is everything I said in my previous post to this thread.  I use the XPB with a sabot in my black powder as do a number of my friends with fine results.  I would recommend them.
