went out last night on a coon hunt......
« on: January 10, 2006, 04:11:28 PM »
had a great time. only called in and shot two of em... had a cold front come through and they seemed to be spooky. i use a prey master digital caller with coon fight chip. my best night out was 28 in 4 hours... last night 3 in 2 hours. one gave us the slip but the other two turned into nice pelts and are drying in the barn tonight!

our first set up was in a dried up creek west of a partially dry pond.... surrounded by willows, oaks and a few pecan trees. the first one came in through the trees and never came out for a clear shot. but we did see him peaking around the trees.

the second-- another creek below the damn of another pond--- came running right in and took the head shot at less than 15 yards.

the third, on the edge of a wheat field-- in some pecan trees. another close shot less than 20 yards. i didnt weight the second but im certian it was over 25 pounds-- a sow of a coon for sure!

Congrats! I do a lot of fox hunting and I'm trying to figure out these willy eastern coyotes but I've never called for coons. Do you use spot lights or are you just using the light of this nearly full moon?

the moon is enough to see movement once your eyes adjust. then when im getting ready to make a shot, i have a sure fire flash light mounted on my gun, pressure switch and bang-- you got em!
