« on: January 05, 2006, 08:02:06 AM »
Thinking about treating myself to another new Handi. Torn between 270 and 30-06. This one will mostly be used for elk and moose. Any suggestions???

I have had no problems with my 270 on moose...but, If I were thinkin of another handi for "the big stuff", I'd probably buy one of the new .35 Whelens!

The 30-06 with a 180gr bullet will hit alot harder. You can also get Federal or Hornady "high energy" loads and up the power close to 300 Win mag.

Lets see, your going to use it for Elk and Moose right? The best choice between those 2 huh? Well without a doubt it would be the .280!!! My second choice, and a close one at that, would be the 30-06. It would serve you very well also. I do not think you would have any regrets with either one, the .280 or 30-06. I personally would take either one over the .270 for Moose and Elk. And the option of choosing a .35 Whelen makes the choice more difficult!!....<><....

lets see now,

.280 Remington - .35 Whelen - 30-06 - .270

                  OR

.35 Whelen - .280 Remington - 30-06 - .270

                  OR

30-06 - .280 Remington - .35 Whelen - .270

                  OR

30-06 - .35 Whelen - .280 Remington - .270

I really hope this helps ( :-D ), it still leaves a few decisions for you to make based on your own preferences but can you see a pattern developing here? And not only in my post but in all the posts????
Be it 2 choices or 4 choices the .270 has last place solidly locked up....

If i had to choice between the two it would be the 30/06 hands down and yes i own a 270 .

It works well for med to large game but for Moose and larger Elk I feel that it is border line .

That is why i also own a 7mm Rem Mag bolt gun . :D

Of the two asked about: 30-06. It's a classic that every shooter should have at least one of.

30/06 !!
« Reply #12 on: January 06, 2006, 06:33:45 AM »
Hello,
Given the choice between the two, I would choose the 30/06 hands down. While the .270 is a proven round for most big game it is not nearly as versitile as the .30 caliber. The '06 will shoot a variety of bullets well, from the 95 gr. pistol bullets all the way up to the big ol 220 gr. Grand Slams. These larger bullets will cleanly dispatch a moose or elk as long as you do your part. I know that a .270 will also, but it does not offer the option of the much larger bullets. Good Luck.

I have always heard that the best place to shoot a moose is ............   right beside a front end loader.

OK then, we've collectively eliminated the 270...now I'll throw the choice back at ya with the 30-06, 280 and 35 whelen. Again, which one are you guys recommending? I know plenty about 30-06 performance,  but know nothing of 280 and 35...
Who's got 280, 30-06 handis? How are they?
Again this will be used just for mid range elk and moose. Not deer...got my 243 handi for them.
Also I have 3 palletwoods thinking about giving a s/s handi a try. Opinions??

I own both the 30-06 and the .35 Whelen in Handi rifles.  When I go for Moose I take the .35.  Simply because it has the bigger bullet, the better to break through heavy bones (ribs and shoulders).  The rest of the time I carry the 30-06.  The .35 Whelen is limited to 250 yards max.  That is it's only drawback.  If I could only have one gun I would opt for the 30-06.  With a 220gr Nosler Partition it will take down a Moose with no problem.  That same load is adiquate for bears.  I would not want to take it for Coastal Browns but I would not hesitate taking it for Grizzly, or Black Bear.  I use a 165gr Sierria boat tail for all my other shooting with the 06.  I use it for Caribou and Wolves mostly.  I often shoot out to 500 yards, and a few times out to 600.  If a wolf is standing at 700 I will try, but I miss a few too.   My range finder has a hard time locking on to something that small at ranges beyond 600 yards.

Sense everyone else is throwing their 2cents in, I say 30-06.
Though if you hand load, 280. Take advantage of that 26" barrel. It's one of the only calibers we can get with it.
 Now a 26" 30-06 wou....well never mind.

I would love too, but all my $$ is going straight to my XR-100 in 308 I got on layaway.
I have been looking for a 26" 308 or 30-06 for target work. I finally found what I've been looking for. :agree:  :toast:

For all the moose experts, who has gut and quartered one in 4ft of water. You gotta get it on the ground ASAP or else the water exit is used. You can do decent with a 30-30 on a bootjack bull, but that is the meathunt deal. I wouldn't be undergunned for trophy hunting.

Yeah Nrut, no 35's here.
Well as near as I can see...280 and 30-06 ballistics are very similar, 280 only gives up a couple hundred feet/second. Didn't have a book to confirm it, but I'm sure the '06 has greater energy. I do like the fact that you're saving considerable powder with the 280!

Just note all three use the same case.  The 280 and the .35 Whelen use the 30-06 case.  They just use differant bullets.

i'm a guessin', since i haven't shot one yet, that the new Hornady Interbond in 130 gr' .270 cal' will drill a hole through an elk or moose that is plenty sufficient to dispatch one cleanly -- if it is properly hit.    and.......it will shoot flatter than the .30-06 for the elk that reportedly are so skittish that at times they'll leave the county running away from you.    a lot of elk are killed in close-quarters combat in thick areas.   but if you have to take one at a long distance you'll want a flat-shooting caliber with a bullet of controlled expansion that will hold together.    moose.....you want to kill before they go down over the next hill or get into water where you can pay hell trying to get them out.

ever read www.findarticles.com with your topic being elk hunting, or john barsness or holt bodinson (sp?) or wayne van Zwoll?     they tell about big elk being killed easily by the .270.......with a proper 130 gr' bullet from a few years ago.    the newer bullets, in some instances, make it even more of a good thing.

i hope you're happy with whatever you purchase.

take care,

ss'

hey,

if it was up to me, not setting up the post as wanting a .270 or .30-06 (for the shorter barrels, maybe?) i'd recommend a .280 Rem' !    not because i'm the ONLY one saying ".270", but because the .280 Rem' is probably a Little Bit better cartridge than the .270 --- especially if it's out of a 26" barrel that shoots well!    well-developed 7 mm projectiles, high velocity, excellent sectional density,  decent brass availability = a contender for just about everything that's been said about the .270

but let's be honest.   o'connor's cartridge was/is everything that he said  it  is.   it's a bell-ringer, even in a 22" barrel.   and it can still be handloaded to high pressures and flat shooting of great projectiles.

just my two cents,

ss'

One thing no one has brought up.  With good handloading of the .35 Whelen you can approach the factory ballistics of a .338 Win Mag.  That's a lot of punch for that big .35 cal bullet.  A real bone crusher, when placed right will drop anything in North America in it's tracks.
