Any weak points to the 1895GS?
« on: January 06, 2006, 08:29:26 AM »
Are there any significant weak points[or quirks] to the 1895GS stainless Guide Gun cal.45/70?
If so,can those weaknesses be adressed with aftermarket parts/gunsmithing?
Thanks.

Danged squared trigger cuts my finger every time I shoot it with high velocity loads.  Having said that, if it were mine instead of my buddies, I'd take a file annd round off the botton edges.  The other thing is to get rid of the ports.  I'd rather take recoil any day over report, but it's another personal thing.  After saying that, if I lived in Alaska or another area where a big "thumper" is necessary, I'd take the GG any day of the week.  To paraphrase the gun writer when it came out, "if 5 rounds of 45-70 doesn't stop what's coming at you, it just ain't your day."

Here's my list (I own one):
[list=1]
  • loose screws - The recoil seems to loosen things up. After you get it broke in, use locktite blue on everything except the lever screw.
  • Trigger sear - polish and change angle slightly to reduce trigger pull to around 4lbs and eliminate grit.
  • recoil pad - get a good one
  • dehorn the trigger guard so that it doesn't mash your nasty finger knuckle under recoil.
  • Peep sight. Williams WRGS.

Replace the factory sights with peep sights. I added a nice recoil pad to mine.

Still my favorite rifle.

Larger lever loop, ghost ring sights and  scout mount and you have the best close range big game rifle I have ever used.  I also used the WWG ejector and magazine cap, and a few other gizmos.   Spray on bedliner goes a long ways to making the wood more durable too.

quirks in the 1895GS

Putting a Limbsaver slip-on recoil pad to bring the l.o.p. to 14.5", and adding a Williams WGRS peep/receiver sight are already on my list.
I appreciate the other suggestions.
When I get the gun,I just want to make it reliable for if/when things get hairy  in the bush.
Figure I'll zero the sights for +3"@50yards and be all set.
May use the Hornady 350gr flatpoint with IMR4198.

I just came from the gun range, I have my Marlin sighted in at 50 yards with my XO Peep Sights. The difference is day and night compared to the factory sights. The Peep Sights make adjusting easy. I do not reload, so I shot a variety of different name brand ammo ( PMC Silver, Winchester Partition Gold, Remington) I shot the PMC Silver the most and it had the hardest kick and was the loudest. I think that I shoot the Remington ammo the best ( 405 GR. SP). The more I shoot my 1895G the more I love this gun, it is my favorite.
