first deer in 06
« on: November 09, 2006, 01:52:53 PM »
Got my first deer of the year last week, a late afternoon hunt.  Small sized doe good for the freezer! I used a Horton xbow, spitfire mechanical broadheads, and Horton aluminum arrows.

Made a dumb error almost cost me the deer. I have a bad habit of having my left thumb sit on top of the arrow when sitting up in the treestand and forgot to take it off before releasing the arrow. Felt like it broke my finger and the 3 deer trotted off a short distance. They never saw me or anything and came back into range not 10 minutes later.

those spitfires sure leave a blood trail. that deer went no more than 25 yards into the grass and died. I shot a nice 10 pt. with the same set up 2 years ago.

Will go out this weekend hopefully for a buck here in Ohio.

Congrats on your deer. Darned lucky you did not take the thumb off I have heard of that happening.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Lucky yeah, but my thumb was back far enough that it was nowhere near the broadhead. But the force of the string hitting it was what really hurt...its still a little sore 10 days later.
I have done that twice in practice sessions. I have to break that habit.

Amazingly those deer didn't know what happened when the arrow went into the ground between the 3 of them.  I should have sat tight on the second shot though, the biggest doe was still coming in when I shot the first one.

Congrats on your deer.
You can lose a finger tip or thumb part just from the string hitting the part sticking above the rail.
To learn from your mistakes, first you must realize you made a mistake.

Nice deer Slayer.
I have been sold on xbows since the year before last when I shot a 10 pt.

I like it even more now since I am recovering from open heart surgery last spring. Less wear and tear on me compared to a regular compound bow.

Went out today after a rain out day yesterday, but didn't see a thing. :-[
