I sold my Encore to get a Savage 10ML II and am not disappointed. Shot it some today at 80 yds and got 1.25" groups. You do have to use a tight-fitting sabot, powerbelts are not acceptable, so I've read. You also have to seat the sabot firmly on the powder. All in all, I'm very pleased with it.

Just check your local laws, some States will not let you use smokeless during a ML season.

I prefer the Encore for muzzleloading.  :D

I answered my own question . Virginia does not allow smokless powder to be used in the muzzle loader season.

The gun doesn't require smokeless powder.
You can use Pyrodex, 777, etc if your state does't allow smokeless powder.

If you like the gun buy it.

Hey Truckie, don't give up on the Savage yet.  Virginia will allow the use of smokeless powders in the muzzleloader season, starting in 2006, as will the state of Illinois.   Here in NC, I've been hunting with custom built smokeless muzzleloaders for some 15 years now, and the Savage for the past 6 years.  I can tell you they are the safest, cleaniest, and most simple muzzleloader there is.

I love mine.. I shoot it quite a bit mostly w/ 250grn xtp, and 46grns. IMR 4227. this load is right out of the book. I did use it this year to tag out in Ohio, I managed to shoot a fine doe (@176yds. measured w/a laser). I will tell you that Toby Bridges http://www.hpmuzzleloading.com Had one blow up on him I'm not exactly sure why , but my gun shows no signs of  wear like he's showing

For those who've not heard about this, go to www.hpmuzzleloading.com (Toby Bridges' site), enter, check the table of contents for "Warnings and Cautions", where an extensive evaluation of the Savage appears.

Apparently Savage deviated enough from the specifications of the original designer (H.Ball) to render this gun unreliable, perhaps dangerous, with smokeless loads.

IMO it's a bad apple I'd steer WAY clear of unless I was going to definitely stick to BP and replica powders.. in that case, I'd use something else, as the ONLY distintive thing about the 50ML is it's PURPORTED ability to use smokeless.

I own a Savage 10ML-II and I have to say its a great gun. I also read Toby Bridges web page before I bought the gun. At first I was worried about the future purchase but after reading posts on many sites, I found no other sources that would agree with Toby about the design flaws he insists are there. Look around and you will eventually read about how Toby was a consultant for Savage and there was a falling out between them. Many claim this is an attempt by him to discredit Savage. Can't say that any of this is true, but I've heard more good things about the product than bad. And most people who have bad things to say have never touched the gun, never mind shot it.

In any case, look at the gun if your interested. Don' believe someone who has never researched or seen the gun. I got to try one at the range one day before I bought the gun.  After firing it several times I was sold.

Have One AND LOVE IT.

From My understanding Mr. Bridges employment was terminated 2 weeks before this mishap. True or false IMO this is a great product.

I will say this much about the ML10 and Mr. Bridges.

He was the ML10's biggest fan until he was fired by Savage and by Henry Ball, the patent holder for the ML10's design. Suddenly he finds all this breech plug erosion and has a barrel fail mysteriously. If you examine the pics of the burst barrel you can see copper marks in the barrel. Just how we do not know if he was using sabots. I suspect an intentional barrel obstruction to destroy the rifle.
Henry Ball is a friend of mine and he has given me the low down on Mr. Bridges. After trying to lay claim to part of royalties on the ML10 patent and after trying to get money from Savage after being fired he then threatened to black ball the ML10 on line. As you can see he made good on that threat.
Of all the thousands of other ML10's on that have been sold and are being used not one has failed that I know of but Mr. Bridges rifle. If anyone here knows of one speak up!
Nuff said.
...for him there was always the discipline of steel.

Yeah, I remember those days well.  I bet he still shoots a Savage when nobody is around!
