Came across a 38-55 Cowboy the other day in a gun shop in used but good condition. Is 499 a good price?

Offer them less.  Asking price is just that, "asking". not getting.  Is it a good price, I don't think so but there is only about $50 of room in the deal.
If the rifle is really nice and you really like it, get it.

Actually, if the rifle is clean.. that's a pretty good deal.
It's good to negotiate, but some places don't dicker.

I ended up buying the rifle. When I first saw it I didn't ask to handle it - trying to avoid temptation. After about a week of thinking about it, I went back to look at it. Very nice, didn't appear to have been fired or cycled hardly at all. Also had a Lyman globe front sight, rear dovetail filled, and Marbles tang sight which I didn't know. Couldn't resist. Offered 460 and that brought it home.

Whith those sights already installed, you do good.  That is a great rifle.  I wouldn't sell mine for that price.  In fact, I wouldn't sell mine for any kind of a resonable price.

You did good.  I picked up a 1893, (mfg. between 1904 and 06').  It started out life as a 30-30 but has been restored and sleeved into 38.55.
I can't tell you how cool it it.  It is beautiful and shoots really well.
We both lucked out!
