22=250 problem?
« on: January 15, 2006, 06:50:08 AM »
After firing a shiny ring apears about 1/2" above the rim , after reloading some have broken at that ring, only after a couple or three reloads. What am I doing wrong and what is the cure?  Thanks guys :roll:

That shiny ring is called "INCIPIENT SEPARATION" IF THIS HAPPENS ON THE FIRST FIRING OF NEW BRASS OR FACTORY AMMO, YOU PROBABLY HAVE A HEAD SPACE PROBLEM. If the brass is old it is time to get new stuff. This can happen on brass that has been over loaded the first shot, but normally takes a few reloads to show up. Check your chamber to be certain there is no problem with it.Make sure you haven't "set back" the bolt lugs,if this is a bolt gun. A local gunsmith should have a GO/NO GO gauge for the head space. has accuracy changed since this started?

The rifle is a H&R handi rifle with about 80 rounds through it. :(

You do have excessive head space as stated before.  If recently purchased, and fired brass from factory ammo has the ring, I would take the gun back.

If the rings are only showing up on your reloads, you are oversizing your brass.  Smoke a case neck with a birthday candle and adjust your sizing die to just clean the smoke off that neck.  Don't move the shoulder on the brass.
