7mmRUM & 120 Barnes trip/shock
« on: January 11, 2006, 05:06:20 PM »
Have a 7mm RUM (sendero) that I am shooting 150 scirrocos in. Now have a 300RUM that I will shoot the 150 and 180 scirrocos in, depending on on what I will be hunting.

Would like to load my 7mmRUM with the 120 barnes trip/shock for some long distance whitetail hunting.

Does anyone have a load of this nature? What will my approx. muzzle velocity be and what will my effective range be(how far before bullet stops performing or at what speed will this take place. Most of these deer will be <150lbs.

thanks, DM

I looked in the Barnes #3 manual and they don't have the 7mm Ultra Mag listed in there data.  Looking at the 120 gr XBT for the 7mm STW, the velocity is around 3200 to 3600 feet per second with the 120 gr XBT.  I'm assuming it will be very close to that, looked in the #6 Hornady manual and among simular bullet weights the Ultra mag seems to be around 100 ft/sec faster than the STW.

I'd call Barnes and see if they'd send you the date on the Ulta.

My wife once made the mistake of telling me "all of your guns look alike"...No, I've had this gun for a long time! LOL

thanks. oliverstacy, called Barnes and they emailed me the info.

Looks like the retumbo powder is were I will start. Anyone thats used this powder have any thoughts.

Looks like with max charge(if they shoot) I should be between 3800/3900 fps range.

By another chart(gunblast) I should still be at 3028fps and 2443 energy at 300 and 2580/1773 at 500. Should fill the bill for a long range whitetail gun.

For those who shoot barnes bullets. Will this bullet (120TSX) still open up at 2580 fps. or what should I expect with a shoulder shot vs a high double lung through the ribs shot.

thanks, DM
