Pocket Holster Questions
« on: December 04, 2005, 03:25:46 AM »
I have been looking at pocket holsters for my Walther PPK/S. I have never owned a pocket holster before, but I think I have narrowed my choices down to two.

The first is the PCS redoubt or harpoon modle www.pcsholsters.com Each of these are $45.

The second is the Kramer Handgun Leather www.kramerleather.com  The pocket modle is about $80.

Now, sometimes you can buy the same type of product for a wide spread in cost. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I want a good quality holster. I figure this will be a holster that I will still have in ten or fifteen years.

Comments please.

Thanks.

Dave-
This is not an argument but personal observation.
I have two PPK's. One is German and blued. The other is a stainless American.
I have been carrying the stainless in my pocket, without a scabbard, for 30 years. I tried one of those pocket scabbards but was not in favor of it as it seemed bulky.
I also like the way the weapon is presented without the scabbard. It is quicker and easier, to me.

I will say that your opinions certianly tell me that pocket holsters (or lack therof) seem to be a very personal matter.

I very much appreciate the input and opinions. The information is giving me more to consider. (It's not helping me make a final choice at this moment, but that's ok, I guess that means I need to think about it more).

Dave.

PS, if there are more opinions or input, please post. Choices are always a good thing.  Thanks.

I can't tell you anything about the other Manufacturers' holsters mentioned here, but I can tell you about the Kramer.

I have one for a Kahr PM9 that I carry daily.  I've had it for about 4 months now and have a few observations.

It was too tight from the factory.  However, they have instructions on the website on how to loosen it up some, and it definitely loosened up to what I wanted.

It's definitely not as fast as having no holster as williamlayton observed, but you have to qualify that statement with mine.  If you have your hand on the gun, the draw is the same with or without the Kramer.  If you don't have your hand on the gun, it's slower with the Kramer, no doubt about it.

If you carry without a pocket holster, I wouldn't put anything else in the pocket...but that's just me worrying about something tripping the trigger.  The Kahr doesn't have a safety as it's DAO and it's something I think about.  With the holster I don't have to think about it as the trigger is completely covered.

Just food for thought,

Ka6otm

I have used two different types of pocket holsters - those by Uncle Mikes which is a soft ballistic nylon holster and those by Kramer which are harder shell leather.  I prefer the Unlce Mikes.  The Kramer is too snug in the pocket of a pair of jeans or in a coat pocket.  The Uncle Mikes is soft and very conforming to what you are wearing.  In addition, they cost less than $15 per holster.  Ya can't beat them.  JMHO.  Mikey.

I only have one pocket holster, it's a Desantis Nemesis. I occasionally pocket carry a P-3AT in it. It works ok in cargo pants and shorts. Not so well in jeans or tighter fitting pants. My take on pocket holsters is, they are all pretty much the same other than materials and price. For me the one I have works as well as an $80 holster. Usually the higher dollar leather ones are bulkier than the low cost Nemesis and Uncle Mikes. For me, anything larger than the P-3AT belongs on the belt. Now, spend your money on a high quality leather belt holster, you get your money's worth there!

I usually wear relax fit jeans or dockers or cargo shorts, will the Desantis Nemesis show a print of the Walther thru these types of clothing?

Dave.

(So much for narrowing my choice down to two)

Dave,
I get away with the P-3AT, but the Walther is quite a bit bigger. Guess I'm a bit more aware of it's presence than anyone else. It'll cost you less than $20 to find out if the Nemesis will work for you. I promise you, the Nemesis works as well as an $80 holster.

Savage,

Yeah, your right there...I don't know why I'm being such an old lady about this. I've thrown away more than $20 on "hey try this" stuff before. And that was without recommendations.

Thanks for the input. I will order one and give it a try. If I don't like it, at least I'll know why. The worse that will happen is I could always ebay it for $10.---sometimes I see guys buy stuff for more $ than new!!!!

Dave.

Dave,
I have a friend in my dept. that insists on leather everything. The more expensive the better. He too pocket carrys a P-3AT. His holsters are bulkier than mine and don't offer any advantage that I can see. Good luck!

Well thanks guys for all of your input. After "narrowing it down too two choices" I ended the days of mental torture and agony that I put myself thru (actually I have been hunting alot and just checking the internet thing when I had a chance), bit the bullet (don't let anyone tell you that doesn't hurt) and ordered the Desantis Nemesis.

It was either that or sell the Walther just to end the agony. But the Walther is too much fun to shoot at the range.

Thanks for the input. If I don't like the Nemesis, I'll let you know.

Dave.

Another vote for Sam Andrews's leather.  I have been using one of his pocket holsters for some time, when carrying my J Frame Smiths.

Sam is a pretty good guy also :)

I carry a north american arms guardian .32 in an Aker sharkskin holster.

The holster still looks like new and I carry it almost every day.
