I've seen the 9x53R mentioned on a site or 2, notably the Baikal site.
They are apparently chambering the IZH-18MH single shot rifle to this cartridge.
Someone said this was a new hunting round but I'm darned if I can find info on it anywhere.
Can anyone tell me anything about it? :|

It's a 7.62x54R necked up to .35
Probably between the .358 and .35 Whelen in performance.

But is it a true .35 cal(i.e..358")?
Or would you find your self having to buy bullets from Norma or RWS to load it?
I guess it's kinda close to the .356 Win.

I've read it uses .358 Bullets (unlike there 7.62 using .310 -.311 Bullets)and it would be much closer to the 35 Whelen than the 358 Winny or the 356 Winny and would be more apt to handle Heavier (longer) bullets than the 358 (356) Winnys. Heck of a round for sure.

If only we could get Baikal to ship their more exotic calibres outside mother Russia! :roll:
That's makes 3 cals I'd like to have in their single shot rifles....7x64R, 9x53R & 9.3x74R. :wink:

kombi1976; I am going nuts trying to find this caliber 9x53r? The Russian Izhmash Saiga people are offering this in a Saiga semi-auto sporting rifle its due here soon in the US. I'd like to know the power of the round. I'm very interested in the 9,3x62 and 9,3x64 too. I'm browsing for two more bear guns for my sons so they can hunt in the future. I use a 338win.mag but i would like to get something bigger and different. The 9,3x64 is similair to the 375H&H in ballastics. I was hoping to see the saiga semi auto in 9,3x64 they offer it in the tigr(dragunov) in a hunting rifle too. The prices maybe a factor too so i mnay have to settle for bolt actions. But like i said i'm just browsing looking for info. I'd like to take the boys on a hunt in Canada someday soon or before i pass on.

I'm no expert but I think in this country these are considered "oddball" rounds. European countries have used them for years but they just have never caught on here in the U.S. It's a shame because they are excellent hunting cartridges.
