Worked on a new load with the Barnes 250 grain .45 caliber muzzleloader bullet loaded in the .45 LC. Using 26 grains of H-110,CCI Mag Large Pistol primers with a OAL of 1.74". My barrel has a Tasco red-dot sight. At about 40 yrds. the red dot more than covers the orange target spots I was using...I center the red dot over the target spot and fired a round...dead center..the next shot was about 3/4" above. Recovered bullet looked like a magazine ad photo. Here piggy,piggy! :grin: :grin: May have to mount a regular pistol scope to see what she will really do.

I'll have to put that load into the memory bank. I have a new, unfired 45 Colt barrel and no time to shoot until the summer :cry: as I'm too busy tring to build a new home. I still drop in here from time to time though for a change of scenery. Any thing to add on your bullet choice? Is your barrel a 10"?

That load sounded familiar so I looked at mine and found a little different. 26.5 grains of H-110, Win large pistol primer, 250 Hornady hp/xtp. I shoot it out of a 10" barrel with open sights and get acceptable groups. It's a handful!

If you are shooting that load in a Contender be cautious. With that bullet you may be getting near 454 Casull pressures.

Jeff, why does the Barnes bullets increase pressures when used over other bullets? I know from reading this is the case, but I am curious why.

I guess you have a 45 Colt barrel only, correct? I mean not the 410/45. Right?

I have been thinking of getting one of these and was wondering how the 45's shoot out of it. They have a long ways to go with no rifling supporting them :?

I must say that I have paid attention to the forum members: 45/410 barrels are good for shotgunning - not 45 colt accuracy. My 45 colt barrel is from forum sponsor VVCG. I was looking for a barrel to complement my 45 Colt Bisley and am hoping this is it. Sorry to say it will be a few months until I wring it out. However the point is: don't expect 45 Colt performance from the 45/410 barrel. Rather expect reasonable 410 performance and marginal 45 Colt accuracy.

Possum, a solid copper bullet is much longer for it's weight than a conventional bullet, thus it has more bearing surface and takes up more case capacity. Barne's bullets are made of a copper which is harder and has a higher resistance to engraving. They also have more resistance comforming to the diameter of the bore. They need a run-n'-go.

The 45/410 barells are rifled all the way. The choke is used with 410 ammo and has striaght rifleing which stops the the shotgun wad from spinning. At least this is so on the Encore. I haven't really shot much 45 LC from mine to have any opinion on accuracy. But it is fun! Good Luck!

Moose, Mine is a 14" 45LC/.410. I get very good accuracy from the heavier slugs..260-300 Grainers,with stout loads. So so accuracy from 250 on down.Might want to go to even heavier just to see how they shoot. I think the part that facinated me so was the 250 Barnes point of impact was perfect for a reddot sighted in with 300 XTP's! Its a handy chambering and I hope to never be without one.
I have a Bisley Black Hawk in 45 LC that likes the heavies also,but does better with the lighter ones than does the T/C.

How did you mount a red dot sight to your 45/410? I assume yours has a vent rib as well. I have been thinking about trying this but don't know how to go about doing it. Thanks

One Shot,I used a B-Square shotgun rib mount..Tasco used to make one also...I had to replace the factory screws that hold the rib on with ones with beefier heads. The recoil from my heavy loads took the head right off one screw! The red dot sight works great with both the .45 LC and the .410..sure beats the heck out of that little silver bead!!! :grin:
