I just bought a new Remington 11-87 super magnum (3-1/2") shotgun a few months ago and have had cycling issues with it since day one when shooting 2-3/4" shells. Has anyone else had problems?

I have been a four time sucker with Remington guns. Everyone I have bought had to be sent back to shoot right. Remington produces a lot of guns but needs to do a better job on quality control. Send it back to them, I think all remingtons have a 2 year warranty.

Trade/sell...Don't look back.

Long time remington fan (of my old stuff) Some of the new stuff not worth the time. not all bad, but too many stories like this.

That's not what I wanted to hear. I got some new O-rings for it the other day. The one that is in it has a few nicks in it. If that doesn't help any I will send it back in after hunting season is over and then maybe see about getting rid of it. I didn't find out tell after I got it that it won't shoot lighter loads was kinda disappointed in that also.

A few people I know have some of the older 1100's and 1187's and they swear by them. That's why I bought mine.

I've got an 11-87 special purpose model for 2 3/4 and 3" shells. I've never had a single jam in nearly 10 years. However, I wonder if, since yours is built specifically for high power shells, it might have a stronger spring or other spec., such that a 2 3/4 doesn't produce enough recoil power to cycle it all the way. Do you have problems with 3" shells (I'm thinking something like a turkey load)? My guess might be that in order to handle the stress produced by 3 1/2" magnum shells, the parts have to be stiffer and stronger to keep from breaking down quickly, and so the shorter shells can't move things as much as necessary. I'm no gunsmith, so it's just a guess, but someone else here with more knowledge might check into that idea.

They may have to beef it up some. For shooting 2-3/4" loads I have to put on another ring that they call a barrell seal activator so that it helps catch more of the pressure to operate the action. In the owners manual it says not to shoot anything less than 3-1/4 dram and 1-1/8 oz. shells or gun may not cycle properly. I have been shooting at least that and it still occasionally doesn't cycle properly. Depending on how many shots I get in in a days time I can pretty much guarantee it will miss cycle at least once during the day. Definitely at least once in a weekend. I've haven't really shot enough 3" shells through it yet to see if it is going to do it on them. I would be really suprised if it did with as much pressure as they generate.

I vary rarely shoot 3" shells and will probably never shoot 3-1/2" shells but I was able to buy the gun brand new for the same price as the 2-3/4" & 3" shotgun so I thought what the heck. I think I am starting to regret it now.

I should have been a bit more professional in my answer. It dosen't chenge the way I feel though.

If Remington says the gun should cycle 1 1/8 oz loads, it should do so.

This is what I'd do if it were mine. Dissasemble the gun completely. Don't foreget the spring in the buttstock (often overlooked)

Thouroughly clean and inspect every part. Look for slight burs that may appear. If you can knock a rough spot off with a piece of sand paper, it won't wurt the gun. Make sure the gas ports in the barrell are clean as well.

LIGHTLY lubricate the movig parts and install back in the gun. Find some 1 1/4 oz loads, as many as the wallet will afford. May as well pick up some clay birds to put them to good use. Depending on where you are at, if you get a decent deal, run some steel through it. Won't hurt anything, the guns made for it.

Take the gun back home and repeat the cleaning process. Get some more 1 1/8 oz loads (may need to try a different brand) and shoot a couple of boxes through it then. I'm thinking it just needs a good breaking in.

To check the 3.5" capability run a box of steel through it. The Winchester X-Pert can be had for less than 15 per box in most places, cheaper than "turkey loads"

Did you install the barrel seal actuator in it that is required for cycling the short stuff? It works on mine, but still have the occassional jamb because the action is set up for 3.5" stuff. I've had no problem when using 3" ammo though.

Yes I do have it installed and it still miss cycles frequently. I have been shooting some 3" through and of course I have yet to have it happen on those. Still doing it regulalry on 2-3/4".
