First handgun kill
« on: January 07, 2006, 06:05:20 PM »
I went out for a spike/doe/hog hunt this week and got my first kill with my handgun.

I was loaded for worst case scenario, scoped FA83 cal. 454 Casull with factory loaded Hornady 300 gr. XTP.

Although I never got a chance at a hog, it was extemely exciting to get a doe with a handgun.  I mean, I got the shakes so bad, you'd think I was aiming at a 180-class buck.  It obviously effected my shot (31 yards) as I hit it high and broke its spine.  The doe dropped right where she was standing.  It was a complete pass through and  portions of the backstraps were damaged.

Now, I'm hooked!!  This reminds me of my first deer hunt all over again.  I will definitely continue to practice and build confidence with it and hopefully next year I will make it my primary hunting weapon.

Sorry, no pictures available at this time.  I will post them as soon as I can.

Good Shootin'

Congrats on the doe. I shot mine this year with 7 1/2" FA 83 in 454 Casull using hand loads with 300 XTPMAG. Worked great. I used a scope and rested on the deer stand window, did you? Carried a 7-30 waters contender for the rest of the season , but did not see anything I wanted to shoot. I almost took a shot at a coyote at 260 yds, but decided to wait to see if anymore deer came out.

Klong,

I was in a stand with my A-bolt .30-06 before dawn.  Waited for the feeder to go off at 07:00.  No sign of anything.  So I decided to go back to the cabin, drop-off my rifle and grabbed the FA to try to stalk some hogs.  As I started to walk back, I noticed 2 does near the feeder. By now it's 08:30 and I could not go back to the stand as the path from my position to the stand was in the open and the does would definitely see me.  So I took a long path behind some cedars and mesquite and got to within 31 yards.  Rested my grips on a sturdy branch and the rest is history.

Eventhough it was just a doe, it was still exciting hunting with a pistol.

Congratulations on your kill. Doe meat is great if you scored it with your handgun. I would make a wager that there are a lot of people that would love to take a doe with a handgun.Oh by the way welcome to GBO.

Listen pard, it is in the hunt not the gender of the hunted.  Doe and Buck still are deer in the end.  It is how you worked the hunt.

Nice shooting and still hunting.
Just another voice in the crowd!!!
