hey guys i just joined this website i am new to NE/HR guns
i just ordered the ultra varmit fluted in a 22-250
i want a 25-06 also but my question is what is the differance between the handy and the ultra? is the ultra worth the extra money

I got a 25/06 "Ultra" for Christmass; it's a real sweetie, right out of the box the gun has absolutely no personality. Load it, observe the fundamentals and the darned thing shoots cloverleaves. Cosmetically both weapons are different but under the skin so to speak they are absolutely the same. The fit and finish of both is very good and levaes nothing to be desired. In mine own estimation I think that the Ultra is worth the extra money. In 1991 I was at a service match in Quantico and it rained. A lot of the shooters had natural wood stocked M-14s, even though they didn't get wet directly, by and large they ahd an immense amount rouble with change in zeroes. Those of us who had Bishop laminate stocks did not experience nearly the trouble in zero change. Frankly I like the walnut stocked Handi and as a matter of fact I've already placed an order for a 280 Remington with a 26" barrel. Heck I'll just take the stock and work it with a little boiled Linseed oil let it set for a couple of days [7] and finish it up with a handrubbing of Tung oil. It'll do just fine.

I don't own an Ultra , just have 2 handi rifles. From what I understand, the Ultra comes with a nicer stock, like a laminate or the ultra varmit stock, compared to what everyone refers to as a "palet wood" stock on the handi.
I also believe the barrel has a nicer finish.

From what I have read, you will be happy with the fluted barrel.

Don't forget to read the Q/A at the top of the forum.. will give a lot of tips and tricks to make your experiance with the handy a more pleasurable one.

In 25-06 the difference between Handi and Ultra appears to be only the stock. The Handi is solid wood, no checkering. The Ultra is laminated wood, with checkering on the pistol grip and fore end.

Not sure what the retail price difference is. I think an Ultra stock set is about $85 from the factory, if you buy a handi, then decide you want to change the stocks out.

I have an Ultra Varmint in .223 with laminate stocks and 24" bull barrel, and a .17 HMR which came with the synthetic stock. I'd be interested in knowing what you think of the skeleton stock you're getting...
