Best elecronic hearing protection?
« on: February 03, 2006, 02:26:05 AM »
I just don't like discharging a handgun without hearing protection. I shot my DW 8in .357 without protection once and it really hurt. Ever since then I hunt with electronic muffs. I will be hunting with a T/C Encore in 7mm-08 and .223 this year.

I use a pair of Bonner Mega Ears for range use and handgun hunting. While I love the sound amplification there is a very strong hissing that accompanies it. What pair of muffs will get rid of the blasted hissing? I am looking for as clean a sound reproduction as I can get.
Thanks & God Bless,
Chuck

I have found in the ear custom molded to be the best.  After researching the internet for months I ended up with the SportEar Pro Customs.  I had costco create molds (they did not charge).  The custom fit is 10x better than in the off the shelf in the ear.  The programable model is also substantially better than the base model.  I did not try the digital model.

If your an NRA member SportEar made by Harris Quest has a NRA discount.  You can find their information on the NRA site.

Due to having a total hearing lose in my left ear from childhood I have tried quite a few different makes and models of electronic hearing protection.

The best electronic muffs that I have found for both protection, comfort and compactness are Peltor "Sound Traps". I also wear them in cooler weather while hiking or hunting.

If I am shooting a lot in one session I also wear molded ear plugs with the Sound Traps over them.

what about wet weather?

Are they waterproof in the event it starts raining?  I have tried two different pairs of Realtors and both of them started buzzing after only one day of hunting.  I was wondering if maybe peltors had less problems...

No unfortunately they are not waterproof.

I live on the Wet Coast of South Western BC, Canada and have been out in all weather conditions (mostly wet and raining). I always wear a very good quality rain coat that has a hood that I flip up when it starts raining.

I have had 2 different sets of Peltor electronic muffs for over 10 years now and both are still working perfectly.

Interestingly enough I think that I solved my problem. My father passed away a few years ago and I grabbed his hearing aids. I tried using them the other day at the range and they work quite well. After some careful testing it appears that they have the high decibel cut off circuitry. Actually they were about $800-$1000 I think so I would assume that they had this circuitry in them anyway. Even using them in my ears with no amplification they worked almost as well as a good pair of muffs.

I assume that the inside the ear models are pretty much hearing aids anyway. Does anyone have any more detailed info on using hearing aids for this function?
Thanks & God Bless,
Chuck

I only use in the canal ear protection unless on an indoor range.  I looked at everything out there and ended up with the SportEar custom.  They are on the NRA site as a NRA vendor.  Also, they are great to deal with.
