Ordered a new .270 Stevens yesterday.
« on: December 14, 2005, 02:57:46 AM »
Before it even arrives, I am ready to start changing things.    How much of a job is it to shorten the stock and add a new pad?   If it is too much trouble with plastic instead of wood, I may look for a wooden 110 takeoff.   Those will fit?     Also, any recommendations for rings and bases for mounting my Elite 3200?
I have already picked out a paint scheme for the stock.  I figure a camo paint job for that gun iis a no brainer since it is not a real "looker" to start with.   And I am a hunter, not a collector anyway.

Thanks for your help.

PEPAW,
What kind of lead time did they give you on the gun?
I ordered mine from Dick's Sporting Goods, and they sdaid two to three weeks. I was just wondering how long others are waiting.

I am sorry to say that due to time constraints (commuting to and from Houston), I wasn't able to purchase from our local gun store.     And he was cheaper!    But the 24 hour Walmart was on the way home and was only 5 days delivery.   We will see.   I have purchased most of my guns, ammo and scopes from that dealer over the past 30+ years, but getting through our growing traffic 'causes desperate measures.

Well, I "un-ordered" the Steven's from WalMart.   Bass Pro-Shop had them for $199 and the .270 was in stock.   I used the extra savings to buy other gifts while I was there.
Ordered my scope base from Midway and spent the weekend camo-ing the stock.   As soon as I get the Bushnell Elite mounted, I am headed to the range.   I still have over a month of hunting season left!

Rick,
I got the scope mounted, trigger adjusted and stock camo'ed, but haven't fired it yet.   I plan on that next week so I can take it on a doe/pig hunt the next week.
I anticipate it shooting well straight out of the box with that stock and 110 action.    Bass Pro had them here in Houston, but someone else mentioned Walmart would honor BP's price.

Yep, long action 110 stocks all the way back to 1958 will fit but from what I read the tupperware stocks have enough screw hole depth to shorten them.

Dang, I love tinkering with these accurate, inexpensive, easy-to-modify rifles like no others. Now I'm looking towards a 7WSM CRF with the new/improved magazine. Do I need a magnum? Well, I don't have yet one so I guess I do.

Haven't got to test drive it yet, but looking forward to carrying it while hunting.   It is noticeably lighter than both of my hunting partner's .270's.

I have decided to trim the stock ASAP and install a Pachmayr pad.   As pointed out by Bigfoot, the screw holes for the pad are very long and I think I can safely take off a little.  I am not worried too much about a .270 recoil for me, but I see the wife and kids using daddy's gun someday.

The camo job should be effective, but I am not sure I that am proud enough to post a photo.     It will work, but I wish I had left more tan color and less background black.    The good thing is that it can be redone very, very easily!

Well, finally made it to the range.   (hunting season has been busy!)
I boresighted and started with the 115 grain Recoil Managed loads.   Very impressive groups from a hot barrel.  Nothing larger than 1 inch.  Tried the factory 130 loads and was surprised at the kick of the regular .270.  But this is a very light gun.    Unfortunately, the regular load was 3-4 inches higher POI than the managed load.
Shot several times and suddenly was all over the paper.   I tightened the Burris Rings (with inserts) and the next group shrunk to 1/2".
I am very pleased with the basic rifle.    I had adjusted the trigger, but that is minor compared to the work I have had done on more expensive rifles that are no more accurate.
I will probably shoot the light loads this summer and re-sight with full loads before my next real trip.    I may install a new pad soon though for shooting practice.    I have never been a fan of any recoil.
