Looking at a Marlin 336A in 32 special at a gun shop. It is in nice condition. Looks like it was carried more than it was shot. Just normal bluing wearing alittle thin on corners of reciever, but very little wear on lever pivot or inside receiver. Wood shows alittle use but nothing bad. Has a Wiiliams 5p receiver sight on it. Has the waffle top receiver and is drilled and tapped. Bore is clean. Is there collectors value to this gun or is it a shooter? Any idea of approximate year of manufacture? $295 good price?

Don't post here much but I'm a fan of Marlin lever guns and I check out every one I see price and condition-wise.

$295 wouldn't be too much for me if I wanted it but I'd surely try to negotiate--I'd try to work the price to 250 or 275 out the door--don't know if/how much sales tax & transfer would be.

I saw a 35 Rem. at a show a coupla weeks back, in similar condition, for $275--too bad for me being short on funds or it'd be sitting in my safe today.

If it's a Marlin with the bull's eyes on the stocks and not a glenfield, and you really want the 32, go for it.

I FOUND A 32 SPEC. AT A PAUN SHOP ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, AND PAID AROUND 275 FOR IT. A LITTLE RUST WHICH I WORKED ON. THE BORE LOOKED OK BUT IT IS HARD TO TELL SOME TIMES AT A SHOP WITHOUT A LIGHT AND THEY USUALLY HAVE LINT IN THE BORE FROM BEING CARRIED IN CLOTH CASE OR STORED IN THE CORNER. WELL I CLEANED ON THE BARREL FOR MOST OF A WEEK, GETTING IT WHERE IT DID NOT SHOW ANY COPPER TRACES. I'd say $295 is probably a pretty good price. I've been watching for a .32 winchester special for about a year now. They seem to be bringing $75 to $100 more than a 30-30 in the same condition. The .32 seems to be tougher to find that the other medium bores. I wouldn't hesitate to make it a shooter as they don't have that "cult" following that a savage 99 or winchester 88 seems to be building that is inflating the prices of those rifles. But hey, who knows?

If you post the first 2 digits of the sn we can probably determine when it was made.

I'm going to take another look at it. I think they would come down on it some, I've been a long time customer there and have bought quite a few guns there. One thing I noticed is how much smoother the action is than new Marlins. And judging from the blueing wear on the lever pivot and inside the reciever it doesn't appear to have been cycled alot. Guess I'll go see if the gun "talks" to me. haha

My 32 special is a 336 RC V24xxx made about 1961 and it is a lot smoother when working the action, than my 1895G of recent manuf. and i looked up the price i gave 265-- in 2002. 30-30 are quite common if you want something different 32 Specials & 35 Remingtons are quite nice.
I am now looking for a 375 Win. to fill the gap in my collection. I already have a supply of bullets for the gun . Their a very light load in my 375 H & H M70.
