Does anybody know if T/C Mag Express sabots are the same? I usually use Hornaday XTP 45/240 sabots and shoot 1 1/2" groups. Only had about 5 left so I went to get some more. Only thing they had was the T/C 45/240 sabots. When I tried them my groups went to 6"   . Checked the usaul suspects ( loose scope, rings, bases, buttstock) but they were good. Any ideas?

TC uses more than one sabot manufacturing company so it is possible that you do have different sabots.  If you still have some old sabots compare the powder cups in the base of the sabot, are the the same?

R u talking about the bullet itself or the plastic sabot.

There are several differant bullets in this range. The xtp mag is differant from the reg xtp being it has a heavier jacket. If you are shooting the 45cal. / 240 gr. this will be the .452 bullet. Double check to make sure you didn't get the 44cal/ 240 gr. bullets. they will only be .430 in diameter and won't shoot nearlly the same. Any 45cal bullet xtp in 240 or 300 gr. will be .452. whether it's the reg or mag.

Most likely if you got a differant bullet, you got a differant sabot too. this will also change POI.

IMO pick the bullet you want to shoot and get some MMP sabots, Both can be bought in bulk and will be cheaper in the long run.

Hope this helps, good luck DM

The bullets are both .452 but the T/C sabots seem to have thinner petals on them. All my Hornaday sabots are gone, so I can't compare them. I guess I need to go the bulk route. Thanks guys. :D

I think you just answered my question...  One sabot the Hornady is probably and HPH-12 made by MMP and the newer sabot is a HPH-24 a thinner sabot designed for tighter barrels.

SST bullets come with the HPH-12's
Shockwaves come with HPH-24's

You could call MMP and get some 12's
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Who is MMP?  I need some Gonic Arm barrel loads in 45 cal.  I hear the barrel is tight and needs a thinner sabot.
Thanks.

Billjoe,

MMP is Magnum ML Products.

They have a web site and ship to the public. They produce the best .50 cal sabots I have ever shot but they fight tight. That is why they work. I have found if it loads easy it may not group. HPH/12 works great but it is tight. I am not sure about the .45 products. Check out the link and call, Del has been a huge help to many. Great source of good advise.

Sorry Jim, but T/C does change their sabots regularly.  I don't know the rhyme or reason, but suffice to say, I need to rework loads everytime I buy a new box.  That being said, they do shoot extremely well for me..after each new load development.  I finally bought a bunch of 250gr bullets this year, but couldn't decide which sabot to buy.  Maybe I'll give those MMP ones a try.  Good luck

Yeah, looks like it's time to contact Del and order 50 of the HPH-12s and see how the work. If they work like (or are the same as) the Hornaday sabots I'll order a couple hundred and be in business. That should cut down on one more variable.

I bought a box of 100 250 gr. HP/XTPs and a batch of 50 MMPs in black (I do not see a designation on the sack as to HPH-12 or HPH-24) and a batch of Harvesters, all from Cabelas.  Both the MMPs and the Harvesters shot OK, with a slight edge going to the MMPs.  The Harvesters are about 1/8" longer than the MMPs.  The sabots that came with the SSTs and the Shockwaves are about 1/8" longer than the Harvesters/1/4" longer than the MMPs.  The pedals on all are thin and easily fit the .452 diam.  bullets.  The blue sabots that came with a box of 200 gr. Shockwaves (which should be a .451 diam. bullet) are too thick even for that bullet and loading was extremely difficult.   I quickly gave up on that combination.

Yes T/C has changed sabots a couple maybe 3 times to my knowledge.

The problems is most attributable to lack of inventory rotation at the distributor or dealer level. (Most manufacturers don't inventory a lot of product, they make it and ship it.)  Buy a box today and you may getting product made within the last month. Buy a box tomorrow from the same place and you may get 2 or 3 year old product. Products do change, simple inventory rotation...first in first out ...would cure 90+ % of the problems.

Sabotmaker-that estimate seems about right...As far as I can remember, Ive gotten three different types of sabots in three years, so maybe this time I'll get smart and settle on one kind and skip out on all the load re-development stuff.  Thanks and take care.
