I plan on getting a New England Firearms Handi Rifle in .44 remington magnum. Does the .44 rem. mag. have the punch to take down white tail deer around 50-75 yards. And what grain and type of a bullet do you reccomend for shooting Coyotes and Deer.

Yeah, certainly the 44 has the umph to put down a whitetail at that distance. Are you handloading or using factory loads? For the factory stuff, I'd look to wide meplat lead projectiles for the best accuracy and slap. Look at Garrett Cartridges, Cor-Bon and Buffalo Bore for spectacular results. But... you gotta do your part, put the bullet where it counts or it don't count atall.

For deer using the .44 Magnum I prefer 240 grain JHPs. The Hornady 240 XTP being my favorite. In a rifle with the higher velocity it delivers over the handguns you might want to use JSPs but the Hornady 240 XTP is devastating in a rifle. Mrs. GB used that in her Marlin to put down the first two big game animals she ever shot. That first one went down like it was hit by lightning and had an exit hole you could put your fist into.

I have a Marlin 1894S and a Ruger Redhawk both in .44magnum that I'm toting for deer this year. I have a Sierra 240gr JHC over a middlin' load of H110 and feel ready for deer out to 100 yards with the Marlin and out to 40-50 yards with the Redhawk (4" barrel.)

I looked at the HEF SB2 in .44mag today at a local gunshop. They wanted $200 for it and it's VERY tempting!

It's a neat little rifle and I believe has a 22" barrel. It has 2" more than my Marlin but in a MUCH smaller package.

I would consider putting some kind of a reciever peep sight on it and using it as is. I have a peep on the Marlin and can shoot it better than any lever gun that I had a scope on. Peeps are great! The .44 is great! The NEF in .44 with a peep would be AWESOME!

Ive got the ruger 44 mag carbine ,and never had a deer or bear go more than 19 yds on me ,the shock waves are visible when the slug hits,great round to 125 yds.i use the xtp 240 grain :grin:

I too ,have a marlin 1894 in 44 mag.and have taken several deer including a 225# [field dressed] and a boar with it. I use the 240 gr. jsp green box ammo and so far have no complaints. its a great little gun and round.

The cartridge has plenty of punch to put a deer down in the 100 or so yard range. I shoot a Ruger Deerfield and have taken two dead in their tracks deer with 240 g soft points. The Deerfield has given me excellent accuracy but will not handle heavier bullets and the factory says not to shoot cast bullets in it. I also have a 44 Handi, which I am still tinkering on. You might want to do a search in the Handi Centerfire section on accuracy issues with 44 barrels.

I shot two deer this year and one of them was with my NEF 44mag. (on my 44th birthday as well

Do a search here about the 445 super mag. Several of us have reamed the 44mag to this chambering and are having spectacular results. We are getting 444 marlin performance out of it.

And, you can still shoot 44 special, 44 mag, and 445 sm. It's my favorite rifle as of today. Both my 45-70 and my .270 have become safe queens.
