I am gouing to a gunshow this weekend,I would like to pick up a mil surp rifle of some sort to plink with and maybe deer hunt with. I have been shooting muzzleloaders for the last couple of years and am out of the loop on centerfires. Looking for something that is cheap to shoot. Thanks for any info.

Mosin Nagant Bolt action in 7.62x54R.  30-06 from ComBloc

Nice guns.  Get a Finnish if you have a choice.  I like the longer M-38 over the Yugo M-44 (with side mounted Bayonet).

Figure $70 for Eastern European make to $100 for Russian (I like the long rifles and will be getting one) to $200 for a nice Finnish.  Do some research.

Buy a block of surplus ammo.  Be sure to clean the bore after shooting.  This stuff is all corrosive.

get a Yugoslavian M48 or M48a, 8mm mauser, for about $150. May look rough but need the cosmoline cleaned out of it, then get a case of 900 rnds of 1950 ammo for about $60 and shoot till you drop. Then buy some PVRI Partisan ammo with soft points and go hunting!

Japanese Arisakas. I prefer the Type 38s, but the Type 99s are cheaper and have a bigger bore. Then 7.7 Japanese cartridge is capable of .303/.308 performance.  :wink: There are NO stronger military surplus actions.

Of all the mil-surplus rifles I have purchased, Mosin Nagants, Swiss K31's, K98 8mm Mauser I like the K98 the best and it is the most accurate.  Here is a three shot group at 100 yards with my reloads.

Grab yourself an M44 Mosin...
Ammunition, especially corrosive milsurp, is ridiculously cheap....my buddy recently picked up a polish m44 for around 70 bucks and an 800 or so round tin of czech silvertip surplus for around...40 dollars.
Can't beat that, and the m44's make amazing fireballs if shot at dusk.

Riht now the hottest affordable buys are  as follows;

Swiss K31

Russian Mosins 91/30, M38 and M44   (the M38 is really neat)

Yugo mausers M48,  M48A,   M24/47

The swiss you'll have to reload for to hunt with it but its really close to a 308win in ballastics.
