45/70 ???
« on: January 18, 2006, 03:04:36 AM »
How do these handle and shoot in the 22" models at 100yds max. I won't be reloading and is ammo still about 1.00 to 1.50 a round? I need a pig gun for 400lb+ monsters and my 30-06 isn't cuttin' it in this thick riverfront brush country I hunt (Brazos River in Hearne,TX).

Ive shot a couple of hogs with mine, they where behind the shoulder shots and neither one went down on the spot. The first one was a sow at around 175 pds. and after I shot her she charged me for 10 or 15 yds.and then turned and went 60 yds.before she piled up. The second one would go 450 pds. and went 1/2 mile before going down, but it was a 160 yds.shot. I use the Win. 300 gr.ammo and both shots made a exit hole about the size of a nickel, that plugged up after a 100 yds. on the bigger one.Mine will shoot 1 1/4" at 100 yds.and is quite a thumper  on the bench. Its the only gun I've ever shot that left my shoulder black and blue after 30 rds. on the bench. I've been shooting my 445 supermag lately at the hogs and it shoots  the 300 gr. bullets at 1977 fps with less recoil than the 45 70 and has mananged 1 knockdown of 3 shots on hogs.  Hope this helps, its not like my  300 Wby. but it manage's on the 100 yds. shot very well. Tom,

I have never hunted hogs, but I have researched it for an Oregon feral hog hunt that never happened yet. There are a lot of stories on the net about hogs that were not killed soon enough by what the shooter "thought" was a good hit with a caliber they blamed on being a poor choice for hogs. This is due largely on lack of knowledge about hog anatomy and improper shot placement. The thread below on the 45-70 and related link to shot placement will explain.

As far as accuracy, my peep sighted 45-70 and my "great" eyesight can put 3 shots inside 1½" at 100yds with the 350gr Hornady @ about 1400fps. My scoped 45-70 Handi will put em inside 1" at 100yrds using hot 300gr partition loads. It also works well with the PMC 350gr +P ammo, 200yds groups are less than 3".

Well, I have put down ALOT of hogs Texas, half n' halfs, half Russian half ferrel. The large boars do not fall. Two weeks ago I laid into a 300lb+ boar behind the ear w/ 300 wby mag. A severed neck is all that held the head on. He only went 100yds or so, but I cant affor

I dont know what just happen, anyway I can't chase these big guys into the brush they are nasty when ticked off or wounded. The Russians although a bit smaller are worse.

tomr,

Here's a site that shows an actual disection of a hog to identify where the vital areas actually are.

A shot behind the shoulder is in the wrong place.

It may be the wrong place to shoot behind the elbow on the shoulder, but my 300 Wby blew the heart and lungs out a 5" exit hole. There was noting left of the heart and lungs when I field dressed her. She still went 85 yds. as thou noting had happened. She weighed about 250 field dressed. If you can get the behind the ear shot, they will drop on the spot, but its risky because most of my shots are running shots. Another good spot to shoot is the upper half of the body,my 445 has dropped them on the spot with this shot along with 3 shot the same way with my 280,plus 3 shot with my 7 mag. The big ones are very hard to drop, because its like trying to knock a 400 pd. boulder over with 1 shot.
Just don't follow a wounded hog into thickets by yourself, have a friend back you up. ( One that can shoot fast and accurate and not run on you)
When I have to go into the thickets I carry my BAR in 7 mag for insurance.  Digger

Tim,

You fooled me with that lever action site as a front!  I guess I should have dug a little deeper.

Digger,

I suppose anything that has a head of steam is going to be hard to knock down.  Of course, it doesn't matter to me if they run a mile, as long as they don't breed anymore.  I'm only interested in extermination, just like the rest of the land owners around here.

The only way to put a large animal down fast is to hit em in the central nervous system, specially an animal that's been spooked. That means a hit to or real near the spine or in the head. Looking at the carved up hog, I'd say a lot of hunters, myself included, would think a neck shot would hit the spine, not necessarily if it's hit too high, the spine drops way down at the neck...

Digger,

You have a different situation than I have.  They don't just eat in competition with cows, they tear up the land so nothing can use it after they get through.  Therefore, they are a threat to our livelyhood and are thus a noxious pest that needs to be exterminated.  If they stayed in the river bottom thickets it wouldn't be so bad, but they don't and it is bad and getting worse.  :x

I suppose that's some good reasons Texas doesn't have any restrictions on killing hogs.  They're getting as bad as fire ants!

Tim,

It looks like a shot in the shoulder is just right as long as you don't miss too high.   :-)

Paul its the same situation up here, but there's lots of people up here that eats them,so I just shoot them and pick up the cell phone and call someone. Most of the time they come and drag them out and fieldress them themselves. Can't beat a deal like that, and the Game Warden's even like it.        Digger

Hello,

I have never hunted hogs with my 45-70 but I purchased it with hog hunting in mind.  Mine is accurate:1 in. at 50 yds, 2 at 100.

I moved to Houston from Calif a few years ago and thought I would try and take the opportunity for hog hunting while here.  But, I haven't found a good place to hunt yet...read inexpensive for poor folks...So, if anyone would like to share a hunt, I would be very grateful!

Matt

Matt,

Look at that Texasboars site posted above.  There are usually some opportunities to hog hunt that are posted.

Another site to check is here http://msoutdoors.proboards27.com/
