Older Huntsman Nipple Size
« on: January 14, 2006, 07:47:22 AM »
Recently purchased an older model 156 in 12 gauge. This was made sometime in the 70's or early 80's. The nipple that is in it just isn't working, misfires and I think the threaded portion is to short.  What size do I need and where can I get one. I tried Numrich arms, they don't have one and couldn't tell me what might work as a replacement. NEF/H&R was no help either.

:D What type of caps are using and have you tried CCI percussion magnum caps? Have you tried T/C nipples? and What type of powder are you using, When I startede with muzzleloading guns I tried pyrodex pellets with my side locks and I was experiencing a lot of miss fires when I used loose powder I had better luck.

The load and the caps are all good. Magnum cap and 2F goex. The threaded portion of the nipple does not go into the breach far enough - can you give me the length of the threaded end and the brand if you know of a replacement.

The problem is most likely the no. 11's. You don't say if you have a push-in or screw-in breechplug.

My .58 cal Huntsman has a push-in type and the 209 primer holder from www.hubbardsoutdoorproducts.com threaded right in and functions flawlessly. The fat firing pin on the Huntsman lights off the 209's with no difficulty.

I would imagine the threads of the screw-in style breechplug are probably the same as the push-in.

You can't go wrong with the 209 nipple for Hubbards Outdoors.  I purchased a ramrod, ball starter and nipple from Ben and it is all high quality.  Your best bet is to calling him and ordering over the phone.

Where we hunt the river bottom here in Montana we cannot use the 209 primer, it has to be traditional - flint or percussion. The threaded portion on the nipple is no longer than one on any of my traditional percussion rifles and the breach on the Huntsman is threaded fairly long. there doesn't seem to be enough spark getting to the powder. I have been a blackpowder shooter for 30 years, but I have never messed with these cheaper guns. If someone has an older gun from when they were first produced and has the original nipple I could sure use the measurements from it or this thing is gonna get set out in the shop with the parts guns.

I have a TC musket cap nipple for an inline I believe, which fits the H&R breechplug, and the forward end projects about 5/16'' beyond the threads.

Just try-fired a cap on my Huntsman, and it works perfectly. The ''tophats'' have about the same energy as the 209's, I'm told.

I don't have a part no. or anything, the things been rattling around in my muzzleloading parts & tools box for years, but I'm sure it's a TC item. Overall length is 15/16'' or so and thread is 1/4 x 28 tpi.

With the extended tip, which has center and side flash holes in it 'hot-shot' style and using musket primers, your misfires should be remedied, AND the "percussion" requirement in your home state would be satisfied.

I hope this will be helpful.

Look for replacement parts for the early model TC inlines, including aftermarket, as I believe that is what this item was specified for... I doubt it was meant for a traditional sidelock, the long tip wouldn't seem to be able to fit into the shallow bolster on those.
