Authentic .30-06 Ball ammunition?
« on: December 13, 2005, 08:36:20 AM »
I'm just getting into service rifles since I picked up a CMP Garand.

At a gun show this past weekend I found some ball ammo, and I want to be sure I identified it correctly.

The headstamps were all 'L' and 'C', which I assume means Lake City, and the numbers were '6' and '9', and '7' and '4'. I'm guessing this means 1969 and 1974 manufacture. The primers were all brass-colored and were crimped, and the shoulder area was darker than the rest of the case.

Not knowing any better, I thought the fact they were all in the 8 round enbloc clips complete with cardboard sleeve meant they were still in their original packaging. I've since found where you can buy the re-pack kits and package them however the hell you want.

Anyway, I bought 280 rounds packaged as I described for $145. Looking at them after the purchase, I found 4 clips had reloads in them. (The cases had hydraulic dents from too much lube, the bullets were hollowpoints, and the primers were silver and uncrimped.)

I debated getting my money back, but decided I don't mind pulling down the 32 rounds involved.

So, to make this even longer, are these authentic, and did I pay too much? What bullet weight might they be? (I'll probably pull some and reassemble, just to verify, but I'm curious anyway.)

Thanks

Buying things at gun shows is kind of hit and miss.
Most of the ones I have been to recently have been like glorified
FLEA MARKETS.. Most of the folks will say whatever it takes
to sell their merchandise... I personally am very cautious about
buying ammo at gun shows... Lots of low quality reloaded stuff..
If you found some obvious reloads in it, chances are there are a lot
more that are not so obvious.. If you reload, I would pull the components
and reload them yourself with fresh powder and primers.
A standard U.S. bullet should be between 147 and 152 grains if I remember correctly...

I would not shoot any Korean or Greek or any other foreign surplus
ammo in my Garand reguardless of the price..  US GI m2 ball is avaliable
at fair prices thru the CMP ,, 4 cans to a case will last a long time..
