We can now use #4 Buckshot in PA for coyote. Anybody have a recommendation on what choke to use? Also what would realistic effective range of this load be for 12ga. 3" ??

Now, I don't use my shotgun for coyote hunting, but I can tell you that for tight, long range patterns on ducks with larger shot, my Patternmaster is tough to beat. It was made specifically for SWAT teams to use for shooting tight patterns with Buckshot at longer ranges, and it just happens to be stellar for other large shot as well. I shoot 2's and BB's at ducks, and I have made some 40 - 50 yard clean kills more than a couple of times. I imagine it would pattern #4 buck spectacularly. They are a bit on the spendy side, but worth every cent.

A modified choke seems to pattern #4 Buck better than a full. You should be good out to 50yrds.

i use my shotgun almost exclusive for coyotes. around here theyll come in as clse as youll let em. ive shot em at 4 yards from a double bull blind and killed em dead as a nail at 65 yards with 3.5 inch #2 copper plated federals. try some heavy shot in #4 and youll be amazed. i think youll see better shots and just as far an effective range with #2 or #4 over buckshot. my experience with it has been that fewer pellets mean less dense patterns. just my $.02 and i know what my #2's will do..... its amazing to say the least. shootin a super black eagle with 28 inch barrel and one of them there pattern master chokes like ole boy mentioned.... i say you gotta have ya one of these babies. :lol:

Hi i seen a 870 super mag pattern at a coyote target at 55yrds and the best choke with # 4 buckshot he got to pattern the best was a Rem Super Full turkey choke. I have a custom buckshot choke for my Rem SP 10ga it is tight. VM

I agree with loki the pattern master is hard to beat. I use one on my 870 SUper mag. It is deadly with #4 buck out to 50+ yards. It also does very well with 2s, BBs, BBBs, for waterfowl.

Back before the days of screw in chokes we deer hunted brair patches and cedar thickets with with hounds and shotguns. Most of us used No. 4 Buck and modified chokes because that is probably what we had. We considered 50 yards the maximum range but we didn't worry about losing a crippled deer because the dogs would trail it up. Occasionally one would drop in its tracks when a pellet hit it in the spine. I know the patterns were not that great as I still have some antlers with #4 buckshot holes in them. We didn't have grunt calls to stop running deer either so we just improvised and sent 27 or 41 pellets of #4 at them.

I grew up hunting in the jungles with dogs chasing deer or pigs,and still hunting in jungles.all we could really use was the ole scatter guns.all my buds had remington M-11s,1100s plenty of winchester M-12s and some 1200s all were 2 3/4" and all were full choked.when I started hunting with the club I was using a win M-12 20 ga.(I had in the past been using my dad's rem M-11 12ga.and made plenty kills with it on deer and pigs)but the gun he bought me was the 20ga.with a full choke.well I missed mucho deer with that shotgun.that last deer i missed I could not believe it.i was shooting from top this smal hill and the dogs were running way behind this ole buck and I got in front and waited for it to come out.I shot two times #3 buck could not even see the pellets hit around are hit the deer.I was sad.and could not believe another miss.and I was only in the club a year and had shot at more deer then most the ole timers had ever seen in there many years of hunting.Ole woody came walking through the jungle up to me and said where was the deer when you shot?I showed him and said I shot about were that branch on the ground is.He said shoot at the branch.I did.could not tell the branch was shot at.then woody shot at it with his win M-12 12ga.with 2 3/4 1 buck the branch and all kinda crap fell up in the air.you could tell WITH OUT QUESTION which deliverd power.I went to the balboa gun club that wensday when it opened and orderd at new remington 870,magnum and a case of three inch double 0 buckshot.the gun was so lethal and at ranges no one could believe untill they saw.That all the guys retired their shotguns and ordered new ones shooting the new 3" shell in 12 gauge.870s and 1100s from remington.
all were full choke,they did not have the screw in back then.we just bought other barrles with the differnt chokes in em.
there was a formula posted on the club board that said 1 buck was the best.from an ole NRA magazine article on tech stuff.that is what every one used untill they got their 3"guns then they all switched to 00buck.
so with out hesitation I say use a full choke for all your lead buck shot.
I have briley screw ins for my H&K super 90 from cly bore to Xfull.Xfull is just a skosh tighter at 40 yards on the pattern target then the full choke.I use the full for hunting those filthy coyotes.and have shot them deader then dead at 85 plus yards with 3"BBs and #4 Buck.Happy coyote huntin to ya.

I have used a Puregold .670 turkey choke with #4 buck in my m870 3" 12 ga. Last year I killed a 40 lb male at 50 yds.
This year I am using Dead Coyote. It kills them dead and it is leagle here in MI for night hunting.
