Is it the grey lam, the cinnamon lam, or the pallet-wood lam?

If it's one of the first two, and you like the way it's set up, you might ought to go for it.  The commemorative models do bring a premium price; but in my neck of the woods you see the 45-70's used for anywhere from $175 to $235--for 235 they're usually on the rack quite a while.  This for a pallet wood-stocked gun.

Will you be putting a scope on it? Is it set up with a rail and hammer extension, or irons?  If it's set up just the way you like it, ready to go, then OK.  If not, maybe you can negotiate the price a bit? $285 does seem high but I really don't know what exactly you have there.

Hey if you really like the gun and have the money, I'd say go for it.

It is the cin lam, w/ iron sights, no scope mount or hammer ext. I did purchase the gun for 245.00(better deal, I bickered a bit). I went to shoot tonight and I had purchased the Remington 405gr ammo. Does this ammo shoot well? It doesn't kick at all, I was hoping to be knocked around a bit and almost fell forward anticipating more kick. What ammo do I need for a good jolt to the shoulder?? I want the pig to fall even if I barely nick it's ear :-D .
Thanks,
Tom

Try Garrett 420grn or (I think)520grn Hammerheads or save some money get a lee anniversary reloading setup ready to go with a few extras for 150 or 200 bucks load them up till your shoulder comes apart.

If you can find it, the PMC 350gr +P ammo shoots real good in mine. Here's a 2003 list of 45-70 ammo...The handloading suggestion works best for me, even if you just use a Lee Loader, it works great for the 45-70.

tomr,
Good job negotiating the price down $40.

The Remington 405gn load is at the bottom-end of the heap power-wise for 45-70 loads.  If you're not set-up to roll your own ammo, I would second the recommendation to get a Lee loader.  This kit has everything you need to make ammo except for components, a mallet, and a stout work-top.  The little card that comes with the kit shows what powder to use with the dipper supplied in the kit.

Good luck.

I would get a kit that uses the Lee hand press, if still made.  Compact and uses regular dies.  Can full length size and it will build up your arm muscles.  Should not cost over $50 I would think.  Loaded thousands of rounds with mine while watching TV (that is-before I was married-stray primer going off in the vacumn didn't bother me) :)

I use 300 gr. coreloks in mine. And I believe that the 45-70, without a doubt, is a very accurate cal.At least out to 100 yds. I'm shooting the iron sights. When you take it to the range and after you fire the first round, you will turn heads :-D  :) I love mine!

Yup, the Lee Loader works great with the .45-70, but I would spend the extra little bit of money and go with the hand press...much faster and easier for me.  Plus, unlike the Loader, with the press you can load at night and not wake the family.
